BWW Reviews: Transatlantic Love Affair Brings Their Trademark Inventive Physical Theater Style to the Exquisitely Lovely THESE OLD SHOESBWW Reviews: Transatlantic Love Affair Brings Their Trademark Inventive Physical Theater Style to the Exquisitely Lovely THESE OLD SHOES
by Jill Schafer - Jan 30, 2015

I'll never forget the first time I saw Transatlantic Love Affair. It was the 'Audience Pick' show at the end of a long and exhausting 2012 Fringe Festival. I was tired and crabby and fringed out, but from the moment the lights went down on ASH LAND, TLA transported me to another world, a world so specifically and beautifully created on a bare stage by a group of performers using nothing but their bodies, voices, and souls to communicate the story. I've seen them a number of times since then, both at the Fringe and as part of Illusion Theater's 'Lights Up' series, and they continue to move me beyond what just 'ordinary' theater is able to do. TLA returned to Illusion Theater last night with a remount of their 2013 Fringe hit THESE OLD SHOES, a touching story of time, memory, regret, second chances, and long lost love rediscovered. In everything they do, TLA is nothing less than exquisite. But disappointingly, the theater last night was not as full as it should have been. My goal in writing this piece is to get as many people as possible to go see THESE OLD SHOES. You cannot call yourself a true Twin Cities theater fan if you've never seen Transatlantic Love Affair, and there's no better place to start than with this achingly lovely show. (more...)

SEMELE to Debut at Seattle Opera Featuring Stephanie BlytheSEMELE to Debut at Seattle Opera Featuring Stephanie Blythe
by BWW News Desk - Jan 27, 2015

Handel's sensuous and sparkling opera Semele is coming to McCaw Hall for the first time this February. Composed to an English-language libretto, this Greek myth tells the story of a mortal woman, Semele, who aspires to live among the “beautiful people”—that is, to become a goddess. Abducted by Jupiter, king of the gods, Semele believes she has found endless love (not to mention endless pleasure!) in the divine realm. But dancing with the deities proves dangerous; Juno, Jupiter's jealous wife, will make this mere mortal pay dearly for her ambition and vanity in an opera that is both comic and tragic. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Lovely Production of RODGERS + HAMMERSTEIN'S CINDERELLA at the Fabulous FoxBWW Reviews: Lovely Production of RODGERS + HAMMERSTEIN'S CINDERELLA at the Fabulous Fox
by Chris Gibson - Jan 26, 2015

A fairytale is brought to its full fruition on the stage of the Fabulous Fox Theatre with their current presentation of RODGERS + HAMMERSTEIN'S CINDERELLA. It's a lovely experience that makes the most of the large stage, filling it with songs and beautiful surroundings fit such a lavishly told tale. Originally conceived and broadcast as a musical for television during the late 1950's and starring Julie Andrews in the title role, this work has been altered many times over the years with musical numbers added and subtracted, and the plot rejiggered as well (book by Douglas Carter Beane) to make it have a more political Bent, at least where Cinderella's feelings toward how the kingdom is being are concerned. But, here we have a production that's suitable for children of all ages. In other words, perfect family entertainment. (more...)

by Carla Maria Verdino-Süllwold - Feb 7, 2015

South Portland's Madhorse Theatre Company has chosen to mount Kimberly Akimbo, an edgy, quirky, wrenching comedy by David Lindsay-Abaire, as their second offering of the season. The five-character tale of a teenager's coming to terms with a strange disease that has caused her to age prematurely, with her damaged and dysfunctional New Jersey family, and with the pangs of first love is etched with colorful characters and occasionally brilliant dialogue and is given a sensitive production by director Nathan Speckman. BWW Review: THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST and the Importance of Purposeful TrivialityBWW Review: THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST and the Importance of Purposeful Triviality
by Maggie Yates - Feb 20, 2015

Wilde's play about the triviality of Victorian culture has been produced everywhere, by everyone. It's a staple of the English-speaking theatrical repertory in the way that “Don't Stop Believing” is a staple of the karaoke repertory. Mercifully, 'Earnest' has the potential to be a great play—the main characters all share Wilde's gift for witticism; the play is purposeful in its absurdity; and it's intelligently written. by Alix Cohen - Feb 12, 2015

Buster Poindexter (aka David Johansen) doesn't so much play 'at' Cafe Carlyle as 'with' it. Like the bad kid from a black and white cult film, this charismatic artist establishes dominion over the highbrow room, determined to lower its bar as irrevocably as a limbo stick in a roadhouse lounge. A blistering, purposefully overwrought, genre-hopping, two-hour performance on Tuesday's opening night had even jaded waiters and busboys enthralled. (more...)

So, a few days ago the “Blizzard of 2015” started, which is by all prophetic meteorological accounts was supposed to be “historic”. It wasn't.
