Getting to Know...JEREMY BENTON Again After His Astaire Award Nomination
by Jeffrey Ellis - May 3, 2016

Hard to believe, but it's been four years since we sat down with Jeremy Benton, whom we've since referred to as Broadway's Best Tap Dancer every chance we've had, and now it seems as that title has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. Just yesterday, Benton - a native of Springfield, Tennessee - was honored with a nomination for a Fred and Adele Astaire Award in the category for best off-Broadway male dancer, heralding his critically acclaimed role in Cagney, the Musical. BWW Review: WET's Creepy and Sometimes Confusing THE THINGS ARE AGAINST US
by Jay Irwin - May 2, 2016

Most often when you go see a play there is a very plain narrative, a beginning, a middle and an end to convey your story. Some plays out there, however, make you work a little harder either with non-linear structure or an existential Bent. And then there are some plays that go so far that you walk out of them thinking "What the hell did I just see?" Well Washington Ensemble Theatre's creepy and surreal "The Things Are Against Us", currently playing at 12th Avenue Arts, is firmly footed in that second camp but often dipped its toe into the third which resulted in a show that was creepy and fun but left my theater companion and me with a car ride home filled with statements like, "Well, I think this is what happened." BWW Opera Review: MASTERVOICES Strikes a Masterful Chord with Dido and Aeneas
by Christina Pandolfi - May 2, 2016

A heavenly aura flooded through the regal New York City Center this past Thursday night at the MasterVoices premiere of Henry Purcell & Nahum Tate's baroque opera, Dido and Aeneas. With a full orchestra, the MasterVoices choir, and the Doug Varone and Dancers company, this unique production created a majestic escape of light, sound, and movement for audience-goers. But the crème de la crème was the other-worldly talents of lead vocalists Kelli O' Hara & Victoria Clark, both geniuses in their own right, as they created the perfect balance of good and evil, sweet and sinful through every note. BWW Recap: GAME OF THRONES Raises Some Eyebrows in 'Book of the Stranger'
by Jessica Naftaly - May 16, 2016

This week's episode of Game of Thrones just aired, entitled “Book of the Stranger,” a title that had little to do with the episode besides a not so subtle namedrop halfway through. This episode delivered more of what Thrones is seemingly becoming more about; shocks, deaths, quips and nudity, and less of what it originally was; a human and complex drama. Despite Game of Thrones insistence that this year, women will be “on top,” we were once again force fed faux-feminism doubling as “empowerment,” while it double downed on it's misogyny, racism, and plain nonsensical storytelling. BWW Review: ACT's Funny STUPID F**KING BIRD Gets Too Deconstructed
by Jay Irwin - Apr 15, 2016

I'm perfectly fine when a play chooses to break the fourth wall and become self-referential. The ability for anything to be able to point out its own shortcomings is a sign of self-actualization. But when a play repeatedly does so and then pats itself on the back for its cleverness of doing so as does Aaron Posner's "Stupid F**king Bird", currently playing at ACT, then it becomes wearing almost to the point of insulting. And while Posner's play certainly has its funny moments, those repeated exposes onto itself started to feel like the play was flipping the audience the bird (and I don't mean a Seagull). (more...)

BWW Review: MR. BURNS...Static Electricity
by Nancy Grossman - Apr 14, 2016

MR. BURNS, A POST-ELECTRIC PLAY defends the thesis that storytelling and making theater may be of great value in times of crisis, but goes awry with its repetitious retelling of an episode of THE SIMPSONS. Director A. Nora Long, a creative design team, and strong acting performances are not enough to put a charge in playwright Anne Washburn's work. (more...)
