BWW Review: AKEELAH AND THE BEE at Wheelock Family Theatre
by Rishka Mehra - Nov 8, 2016

In the opening of its 36th season, The Wheelock Family Theatre showcases a production that pushes viewers to test the bounds of their own potentials and work hard to pursue their passions. WFT's Akeelah and the Bee not only presents messages of resilience, tenacity, and perseverance in the face of adversity, but it also highlights the importance of garnering support through communal relationships and fostering a sense of self by understanding the obstacles of the surrounding world. A powerful story punctuated by humor, WFT's production of Akeelah and the Bee triumphs in its ability to include the audience in a narrative where the courage of a child instills hope in others. BWW Review: The Bond of Friendship Remains Unearthed in Panettieri's A BURAL PLACE
by Kristen Morale - Nov 8, 2016

Presented by New Light Theater Project, in association with 5000 Broadway Productions, A Burial Place recently opened at the Dorothy Strelsin Theatre and marks Director Joey Brenneman's third collaboration with its playwright. This play, representing what true camaraderie is among three childhood friends who come together for a much anticipated night of fun, in its simplicity really brings up quite a few thoughts about what friendship really means; it also made me quite curious to know how the idea for this plot came about. True friendship is almost an agreement among people to share the essence of themselves with others who are either like them or make the world a bit more pleasant because others are part of their existence; it creates a bond that, even if not renewed, stays in unquestionable tact. But does it ever go too far - what happens if who you are, what you try to be and try to understand makes the whole thing just too difficult to bear? What if friendship becomes more of a burden than a joy, especially when you can't know why the past continues to haunt you so? (more...)

BWW Review: KIN at Eve Theatre Company
by Keith Waits - Nov 8, 2016

Eve Theater Company opens its fifth season with Bathsheba Doran's play Kin. Year five always seems to be a milepost: a time for a company to take stock of itself and others. So I would note that this production seems to represent an important moment of maturity and ambition for Eve. It reaches for a subtlety and emotional range greater than most of their previous efforts. The company's mission of a focus on women led to early productions that featured small groups of women hermetically observed: aging prostitutes on a shared bench, or friends moving through marriage and divorces through the years. Most were casts of only women. (more...)

BWW Review: SYLVIA Opens Up a Dog's Mind to Reveal What Makes a Truly Loving Companion
by Shari Barrett - Nov 5, 2016

In the 1995 comedy SYLVIA by A.R. Gurney, married couple Greg (Steve Howard revisiting the role he played with Tanna in 2011) and Kate (appropriately named Beege Barkette) are empty-nesters in the big city. In the opening scene, Greg and Sylvia arrive home after meeting in the park where Sylvia, a bouncy, frisky poodle mix, literally adopted Greg. Tanna jumps up and down, running around just as a new dog inside a home would react, her nervousness and excitement leading her to smell every single inch of the place, leave a liquid deposit, and then remind her new companion over and over again how he is her God she will love and respect forever - as long as he never hits her.
