BWW Reviews: Ravetch's ONE NOVEMBER YANKEE Bows at NoHo Arts Center
by Don Grigware - Nov 27, 2012

Two-character plays for the most part take flight - no pun intended - if the plot and dialogue are terribly funny, as in Bernard Slade's Same Time, Next Year or if it's a musical, like I Do! I Do! The writing and players must have that extra special something to engage the audience consistently for two hours. World premiere One November Yankee, by its premise alone, is intriguing. Its art imitating life theme brings two pairs of siblings to life and juxtaposes them with the brother and sister of the main plot, making Joshua Ravetch's play an overall curiously positive experience...and it's not without several sprinklings of genuine humor. On top of that, it has two exceedingly appealing stars, ageless Harry Hamlin and Loretta Swit, who have the chance to create three roles each. One November Yankee, now onstage at NoHo Arts, may not be the greatest play ever written, but certainly manages to entertain as well as provoke. (more...)

Surfside Players Present SAME TIME, NEXT YEAR, 1/11-27
by BWW News Desk - Dec 31, 2012

This romantic comedy, one of the most popular of the century, follows a love affair between two people, Doris and George, married to others, who rendezvous once a year. Twenty-five years of manners and morals are hilariously and touchingly played out by the lovers, who discuss the births, deaths, marital problems, and social changes affecting their lives, and develop an emotional intimacy deeper than what one would expect to find between two people meeting for a clandestine relationship just once a year. The play was adapted into a 1978 movie starring Ellen Burstyn and Alan Alda. Caution: Contains mild profanity and adult themes. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Georgetown Palace Stages Wonderful Romantic Comedy with SAME TIME NEXT YEAR
by Jeff Davis - Apr 15, 2013

It's tough to make a romantic comedy work. The genre so easily gives way to unrealistic scenarios and corniness. The odds of someone standing on your front lawn with a boom box blasting "In Your Eyes" a la Say Anything or a wealthy businessman climbing your fire escape with a bouquet of flowers courtesy of Pretty Woman are slim to none. While Same Time Next Year has a somewhat unrealistic premise involving two married people who meet at a California resort for a romantic tryst once every year for almost 25 years, the play by Bernard Slade is surprisingly believable, in part due to his brilliant script but largely due to the incredible performances on display in Georgetown Palace's current production of the piece.
