BWW Review: BUS STOP an American Classic Done Right
by Frank Benge - Mar 28, 2016

Coming from Kansas and receiving my education there, I have more than a passing familiarity with playwright William Inge. Being born in the small town of Independence, Inge attributed his understanding of human behavior to growing up in a small town environment. The influence of that Kansas childhood is evident in many of his works, which tend to revolve around characters that are clearly the products of places like Independence. I remember the head of my college theatre department dismissing Inge's plays as "domestic dramas", which I thought was an unfair assessment both then and now. While Inge may not have the poetic lyricism of a Tennessee Williams or the overarching high moral message of an Arthur Miller; he did have an understanding of the concerns of average Middle Americans. It was because of this understanding that Inge became labeled the 'Playwright of the Midwest'. (more...)

According to Director and GSC Artistic Director Walsh, "Songs For A New World is an enthralling evening of storytelling through song and movement reminiscent of Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. We are so fortunate to have such a talented group of actor-singers to bring this work to our audience. EDINBURGH 2016 - BWW Review: JUST BY ALI SMITH, Assembly George Square Gardens, 15 August
by Amy Hanson - Aug 16, 2016

Scottish writer Ali Smith is best known for her short stories and novels, including three books shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize.  Her 2005 play for Shell Connections, Just, offers a delightful example of Theatre of the Absurd that certainly deserves to be as well known as her other literary endeavours.  In this delicious satire, a young woman discovers a dead body behind a Bus Stop, stabbed in the back with an umbrella.  Moving to take a closer look, she is accosted by a police officer who accuses her of the murder.  Soon enough, she is condemned by the local townspeople, and the sinister Mrs Wright, the blindfolded arbiter of justice, as the story begins to take on a darker turn. The Dragon Theatre Presents the Existential Classic Waiting For Godot
by BWW News Desk - Aug 16, 2016

Voted 'the most significant English language play of the 20th century" in a survey of playwrights, Waiting for Godot is considered a masterpiece of surrealist existentialism. Two wandering vagabonds, Vladimir and Estragon, wait by a lonely tree, to meet up with Mr. Godot, an enigmatic figure in a world where time, place and memory are blurred and meaning is where you find it. The men hope that Godot will change their lives for the better. Instead, two eccentric travelers arrive, one man on the end of the other's rope. The results are both surprisingly funny and somehow touching, and the trip will bend your brain in this vigorous conception of Samuel Beckett's classic. (more...)
