BWW Review: Rocking Out to the Life of Johnny Cash with RING OF FIRE at CCTC
by Kristen Morale - May 25, 2016

The Cape Cod Theatre Company, home of the Harwich Junior Theatre, has decided to step away traditional staged storytelling and try something different with its newest "jukebox" production of Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash. Created by Richard Maltby, Jr and hereby directed and choreographed by Pamela C. Wills, with Nina K. Schuessler serving as Producing Artistic Director, Ring of Fire is a story within and through a performance, and this production has the unique ability to depict the lives of Johnny Cash and June Carter, complete with interchangeable characters and interspersed moments of chronological storytelling, in a way I could image they would have approved of themselves: simple, straightforward and even stark (how fitting that word is) in its presentation but so oddly appropriate for the unadorned but deeply affecting way Cash's music hits you. Those on stage are not "acting" to portray these music legends, but instead almost seem to hand themselves over to the audience's belief that this is not a presentation or something that is purely meant to entertain; they are there to tell a story, and with a wonderfully eclectic mix of songs played in the background, there is something so beautiful in the rawness of this entire production. BWW Review: GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES - A Must-See, Ideal Convergence of Creative Talent
by Gil Kaan - May 23, 2016

Rajiv Joseph's very tricky to pull off GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES lands at the Hudson Backstage as a stunning success! Considering the main conceit of GRUESOME PLAYGROUND INJURIES requires two actors playing a 30-year age range from 8 to 38; in less capable hands, this seventy-minute one-act would have been so ripe for missteps.   (more...)

Dancegoers in dazzling formal attire were treated to a Spring Gala that eschewed traditional staples and showcased instead an appetite-whetting smorgasbord of excerpts from the spring season as well as a world premiere and the one-act Firebird. Bravo Productions Presents SEUSSICAL JR. This Weekend
by BWW News Desk - Jun 8, 2016

The first question is WHY?  Seussical Jr. seems to be all the rage this season in our area, with schools at every grade level mounting the fantastic musical extravaganza of the favorite Dr. Seuss characters.  Distinctive about BRAVO's rendition is a return to the notion that musical theatre is fundamentally about story telling and the Cat in the Hat (Luke LaMotta) as the narrator weaves this tale as a "play within a play", where Horton the Elephant (Matthew Milam), Gertrude McFuzz (Cynthia Jacobson), Mayzie La Bird (Madison Sherman) the Sour Kangaroo (Josie Stein) of the Jungle of Nool interact with the citizens of Whoville, led by Mr. and Mrs. Mayor (Mimi Lemar/Will Sexter or Ava Klugerman/Jayden Armour) and their young son Jojo (Lexi Blank).  Horton, in discovering a speck of dust containing the tiny people called the Whos, also learns the powers of friendship, loyalty, family and community. BWW Review: Stellar HEDDA GABLER at Antaeus Company: THE PISTOLS CAST
by Don Grigware - Jun 7, 2016

Ibsen's Hedda Gabler steeped in 19th century realism has never been presented with more visual splendor than in Antaeus' current production. It is their last in the NoHo space before moving to a new theatre in Glendale in the fall, but that is hardly the reason to see it. It is memorable all by itself for its splendid translation by Andrew Upton (2004) and glorious casts under the sterling direction of Steven Robman. Hedda (Nike Doukas in the Pistols ensemble) lives in a fantasyland, a world of her own creation, one which to her is remarkably perfect and beautiful. The opulent home of her husband professor Jorgen Tesman (JD Cullum) is to her, shabby and boring. She hates it as much as her marriage to him, so she envisions in her own mind how she wishes her life to be, controlling the destiny of those around her, viewing even death in terms of its beauty and ... freedom. Delusional or not, she refuses to give in to the will of others and thus remains the quintessential literary tragedienne of the 19th century. (more...)

BWW Review: LINES IN THE DUST - Riveting, Edifying and Upsetting at CPT
by Roy Berko - Jun 6, 2016

In 2011, Kelly Williams-Bolar served a 10-day jail sentence for illegally sending her children to a suburban school outside of her Akron, Ohio district. The sentence disqualified Williams-Bolar from getting her accreditation as a teacher. A storm of protests, both pro and con, quickly followed the sentence and a later pardon by the governor. BWW Review: AN OCTOROON Brings Hilarity and Hard Truths to Woolly Mammoth
by Ellen Burns - Jun 6, 2016

"Out of every eight drops of my blood, seven are red, but one is black." In those words, spoken with despairing apology in An Octoroon by Zoe, the titular octoroon, the illegitimate daughter of a plantation owner, are revealed the most profound and internalized depths of racism. Like a root vegetable, where the substance of the plant is buried under the ground, it truly visible only when you yank it out to examine what has grown underneath. In this case, what's above ground is a brilliant adaptation by playwright, 2016 Pulitzer finalist (for Gloria), and DC-native Branden Jacobs-Jenkins of an 1859 play by Anglo-Irish Dion Boucicault; a play that caused controversy and sold-out houses in somewhat equal measure when it played at the Winter Garden Theatre in the looming shadow of the Civil War. BWW Review: ABT's LE CORSAIRE Transcends Time & Space
by Christina Pandolfi - Jun 3, 2016

At its best, classical ballet has the ability to utterly transfix, bending the boundaries of what we as human beings think is possible. With every gravity-defying grand jete and blossoming developpe, dancers transform into otherworldly beings, physicalizing that which can't be believed. At the 2016 Spring Season premiere of American Ballet Theatre's Le Corsaire, the company did just this, mesmerizing the audience and showcasing their ability to create a unique world of beauty, unto its own. BWW Review: FELD'S KIDS Execute With Polish and Finally With Glee
by Juan Michael Porter II - Jun 13, 2016

We all know that Eliot Feld – who might be New York City's most accomplished man in dance – has a love for calisthenics, vernacular twists and grooves, and folklore. But since closing his ballet company in 2003, his work has been primarily with students who cannot understand the dry wit inherent to his choreography. The effect is decidedly discombobulating. One wishes that Mr. Feld would either up the ante in his work – there were no pirouettes or turns, though there was plenty of batterie, which tends to be more difficult – or further develop the artistry of his charges.
