Long Beach Playhouse Presents THE CYCLOPS, 10/13-11/10
by BWW News Desk - Oct 6, 2012

You've probably heard of The Odyssey, a classic piece of literature written almost three thousand years ago by a blind poet named Homer. Well, the Long Beach Playhouse is turning Homer on his head, retelling the story with the help of puppets, masks and shadow puppets. They're also focusing on one of the coolest parts of The Odyssey -- the one with the Cyclops! Although The Cyclops is set back in the 8th-century B.C., the dialogue is lightened up with references from contemporary times including lines from musicals, songs, poems and pop culture references. The production is both serious and not, in the best sense of contrast. Please note that although this show has puppets, it's not intended for children. (more...)

Flat Rock Playhouse Presents CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF, 11/1
by BWW News Desk - Oct 22, 2012

Onstage November 1-18 at Playhouse Mainstage, Flat Rock Playhouse presents Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, one of Tennessee Williams's best-known works and his personal favorite. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof first heated up Broadway in 1955 with its gothic American story of brothers vying for their dying father's inheritance. The play won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama that same year and has since been seen regularly on stages across the country. Set in the steamy Mississippi Delta,Cat on a Hot Tin Roof takes us deep into Tennessee Williams country, geographically and psychologically. Directed by Tony Award winning director Marcia Milgrom Dodge (Broadway Revival of Ragtime) and starring Barbara Bradshaw (Big Mama), J. Kenneth Campbell (Big Daddy), Preston Dyar Gooper/Brother Man), Robert Eli (Brick), Michael MacCauley (Doc Baugh), Erin Maguire (Mae/Sister Woman), Scott Treadway (Reverend Tooker) and Adria Vitlar (Margaret); Cat on a Hot Tin Roof swelters with the fire of longing for that illusive shade of happiness. The fierce currents of discontent, jealousy, and mendacity that surge through this piece leave the viewer to fend for himself on an emotional and gripping roller coaster. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Kritzerland Soars Once More with Rodgers and Hammerstein Evening
by Don Grigware - Nov 6, 2012

And what 'A Grand Night for Singing' it turned out to be! Not opening on the usual note, Bruce Kimmel presented a video of his YouTube web series Outside the Box, Season 2, episode 1 guest starring Hal Linden, who was present in the audience. Hilarity is at the core here as Linden gets a phone call asking him to appear as Father Marren in The Exorcist the Musical, a true horror - no, not horrible - horror musical. The second scene is the actual shooting of his scene with Regan spewing green vomit to the music of one ridiculously funny original tune. Fun stuff which may be viewed on YouTube! (more...)

Baum and Chambers Lead BRT's NEXT TO NORMAL to Artistic Heights, Both Expected and Unexpected
by Jeffrey Ellis - May 27, 2012

In fact, in the retrospect afforded me by twelve hours, I have to admit that the production's most revelatory performance is delivered by Mike Baum, as the long-suffering and beleaguered Dan Goodman, Diana's stalwart and steadfast husband. That doesn't mean Chambers' performance is anything less than the spectacular onstage turn that it is-but, truth be told, it was expected from her. When word of her casting became publicly known, it is safe to say that 99% of the theater-going public (and actors themselves) agreed that Chambers' casting was indeed perfect. And she delivers exactly what we all hoped for, showing off the versatility, the confidence and the presence that has long identified her as one of the very best to be found onstage. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Nicely Layered Performances in THE UNDERSTUDY at Seattle Public Theater
by Jay Irwin - Feb 2, 2013

Theresa Rebeck has made a name for herself with her rich and engaging characters on stage and most recently with her look into the underbelly of theater with her hit TV show, "Smash". And along those lines her play "The Understudy" currently playing at Seattle Public Theater manages a fun and illuminating look into show business as well. And while the play doesn't always have the most original concepts out there, this production manages some finely layered performances from its ensemble cast. (more...)
