Mixed Blood Theatre's AN OCTOROON to Open 10/16
by BWW News Desk - Sep 15, 2015

AN OCTOROON, which the New York Times proclaimed to be "this decade's most eloquent theatrical statement on race in America today," is a shrewdly awkward riff on The Octoroon, a 19th-century melodrama about illicit interracial love. A funny, disturbing, whirlwind of a play, AN OCTOROON riffs on the antebellum South as well as our present-day American selves, delves into the complexity of American identities and their unresolvable connection to our legacy of slavery and genocide, and perpetrates a full-blooded investigation of race and cultural politics. At the same time it is so theatrically mind-bending, funny, energetic, and demented, that it's impossible to Look Away. (more...)

BWW Reviews: DUNSINANE Concocts a Credible Sequel to Shakespeare's Scottish Play
by Shari Barrett - Mar 30, 2015

What happens when two of the world's most extraordinary theater companies, the England's Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre of Scotland, make the decision to work together on a sequel to Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth, one of his darkest and most powerful works? It's no less than a magical combination of talent that makes an improbable tale seem to be the essence of truth about sex, politics and power. Patricia Wolff, Interim Artistic Director of The Wallis adds, "David Greig's thrilling new drama brilliantly straddles the ancient and modern worlds, playing like a cross between "Game of Thrones" and "House of Cards." BWW Recap: Liza Gets Real with Josh on YOUNGER Season Finale
by Matt Smith - Jun 9, 2015

What a whirlwind Liza has been on this season! And unfortunately for her, it doesn't get ease up in the final installment - if anything, it's even more crazy!! As she tries to patch things up with Josh (remember, she came clean with him at the end of last week's episode), she's hit with another huge roadblock at work, which puts her in another awkward position which may not only lead to legal trouble, but commands her to face compromising her moral values. Though there are no literal fireworks present, it wouldn't be inaccurate to say this episode's an explosive finale, capping off a season of blunders and hijinks as only the YOUNGER writers can create. BWW Reviews: IMPOSSIBLE! A HAPPENSTANCE CIRCUS Impossibly Inventive
by Pamela Roberts - Jul 2, 2015

Happenstance Theater's IMPOSSIBLE! is impossibly inventive, whimsical, and tender. The tribute to classic Depression-era circus life uses period music, a clever costume choice or the arch of an eyebrow to convey far more than mere words are able. IMPOSSIBLE! is a family-friendly production that hits just the right tone - funny not ridiculous, kindhearted not cloying, smart not pretentious. The original piece of physical theater was devised by the Happenstance ensemble. We venture both under the big top and behind the scenes to witness the camaraderie, loneliness, frustrations and foibles of the band of performers. (more...)

New Hampshire Theatre Project to Present THE CRUCIBLE
by BWW News Desk - Jan 4, 2016

New Hampshire Theatre Project explores New England's own horror story through Arthur Miller's classic allegory The Crucible. Miller wrote The Crucible to protest against McCarthyism and the persecution of all things 'un-American, comparing two periods in American history when a mass hysteria of paranoia blamed all of society's ills on one generalized 'evil' - witches in he 1690's and Communists in the 1950's. But we have seen this happen over and over throughout history; the Japanese internments during WWII are a perfect example. This is what makes Miller's play relevant to every succeeding generation, including our own. (more...)
