BWW Review: Love Isn't Enough In THE LAST FIVE YEARS
by Erin Kong - Sep 20, 2016

Watching the story of 'The Last Five Years' is like watching a train wreck in slow motion. You know the impending tragedy, yet it is impossible to Look Away. It is a love story that is heartbreakingly relatable and incredibly painful to watch. 'The Last Five Years' is told through the eyes of Jamie Wellerstein, a novelist, and Cathy Hiatt, an aspiring actress. Cathy tells the story in reverse-chronological order, beginning with their break-up, and Jamie tells the story in chronological order from when they first fall in love. (more...)

For the 2016-2017 no 'shrinking violet' opening of the Cabot Theatre Stage, Skylight Music Theatre presents the 1997 award-winning musical, Violet. Set in the mid 1960's, the Broadway Theatre Center production relates to a young woman's journey when her father accidentally disfigured her face and left a traumatic facial scar amid the burgeoning civil rights movement and beginnings of the Vietnam war. When Violet travels from North Carolina to Oklahoma carrying her dream and hope that a faith healer will remove the scar, the young Southern woman encounters various people on her Greyhound bus ride to remind the audience life's miracles arise in multiple forms when the heart opens the eyes and mind and removes the mundane from the material world. by Christopher Castanho - Nov 9, 2016

In October of 1998 Matthew Shepard, a twenty-one-year-old University student was kidnapped, beaten, and left to die on a fence on the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. The reason for his killing: he was gay. One of the first murders to be labeled a hate crime, it brought attention the lack of 'hate crime protection' several states possessed. Five weeks after his death, Moises Kaufman and other members of the Tectonic Theater Project traveled to Laramie and interviewed its citizens for a whole year after the event. This is the true story of how residents in Laramie, Wyoming reacted to the murder of Matthew Shepard. (more...)

BWW Review: ONE FLEA SPARE at Playhouse Creatures Theatre Company
by Andria Tieman - Nov 4, 2016

ONE FLEA SPARE is a play with a deceptively simple premise, but one that becomes almost overwhelmingly complex as secrets are revealed, motivations get murky and time takes its toll on people. Mr. and Mrs. Snelgrave are upper class Londoners during the plague. As they're quarantined in their home, the acquire two additional people who are then forced to stay in the Snelgrave home to avoid spreading the disease. Morse, a young girl, and Bunce, a retired sailor shake up the staid Snelgrave dynamic and as the four of them are forced to remain in close quarters, class distinctions break down and skeletons come out of the closet. This is a very spare production, set in a black box theatre in the round, but once that is made incredibly compelling through exceptional performances and tight, complex writing. What few props and costumes there are become larger than life and perfectly communicate the heightened and somewhat frantic circumstances the characters find themselves in. By stripping away all the distractions, the performances create an intimacy with the audience that is palpable and electric. (more...)

BWW Review: FINI DANCE FESTIVAL Parties La Via Italiana
by Juan Michael Porter II - Jul 26, 2016

Though it was hot and muggy on the evening of July 24th, 2016, the jam-packed audience at Manhattan Movement & Arts Center was grinning agog like newly minted parents infatuated with their brood. The cause: a troupe of adorable bambine from Staten Island Ballet performing Ellen Tharp's 'Tarantella'. Though only one of these girls was delivering the movement nel modo Italiano, they were all so lively with their tambourine strikes and hops that even the most curmudgeonly of audience members applauded with gusto. BWW REVIEW: Tamara Tunie in AMERICAN SON at Barrington Stage Company
by Justin J Sacramone - Jul 17, 2016

Kendra Ellis-Connor is living every mother's worst nightmare. Her son is missing. It's now four o'clock in the morning and she's at the police station trying to get answers. The officer working the nightshift is useless, her ex-husband isn't picking up his phone and the speculations are beginning to consume her. Her son's disappearance and the station's lack of information raise questions. Kendra has a hunch why. Both she and her son are black. American Son, a new play by Christopher Demos-Brown which ran at the Barrington Stage Company from June 17 through July 9, 2016 is a turbulent parable of America's systemic racism. (more...)

BWW Review: NYCB Creates Colorful Nuance with Stravinsky x Five
by Christina Pandolfi - Jan 30, 2017

Dampened from the chilly rain falling outside, I stepped into the majestic David H. Koch Theater on January 24, 2017 in desperate need of comfort. But I got so much more than that at New York City Ballet's Stravinsky x Five program. As I took my seat, the heavenly timbres of Stravinsky's bluesy score from "Scenes de Ballet" flooded my ears and spirit. In that moment, all was right in the world, and it stayed that way for the entire evening. (more...)

BWW Review: Jeff Harnar Dazzles A Sold-Out Metropolitan Room With An Engaging Revival of His '1959 Broadway Songbook'
by Victoria Ordin - Aug 23, 2016

When a show at the Metropolitan Room starts over thirty minutes late because the staff is frantically trying to find chairs and room for the better part of New York's cabaret community, you know you're in store for something truly special. And unless there's a chair thief on the loose in Flatiron who doesn't like Broadway, someone clearly oversold this show and/or lost track of comps; this was extremely vexing with a heat advisory in effect. Still, the mood was festive in anticipation of Jeff Harnar's 1959 Broadway Songbook, the 12th installment in Stephen Hanks' impressive (and increasingly well-known) New York Cabaret's Greatest Hits series. Harnar's show premiered 25 years ago at the Algonquin's Oak Room. Two years later, PBS filmed the collaboration with musical director Alex Rybeck, whose arrangements honor the original compositions but reimagine them in sometimes astonishing ways, making them genuinely creative acts.
