JUST A FEW FEET AWAY is one of those stories that reminds people just how interconnecting our lives really are. Through a series of monologues, it examines the interlocking stories of 12 very different characters who lives are unknowingly intertwined. There's cheating, scandals and mystery galore and at the center of it all is a renowned geoscientist who is the first man on Earth possessing the ability and knowledge to successfully journey to the center of the Earth's core. BWW Recap: The Inevitable Love/Hate Relationship on NASHVILLEBWW Recap: The Inevitable Love/Hate Relationship on NASHVILLE
by Wendi Reichstein - Oct 22, 2014

On any decently written drama, there's always that one character that you absolutely hate, but at the same time want them to stay on the show due to all of the engaging, crazy, can't-look-away drama they cause. On THE OC, it was Oliver. On GOSSIP GIRL, it was Georgina. And on NASHVILLE, it's Jeff Fordham. Not only is he about to attempt to sign Maddie and Daphne to his label- without Rayna's knowledge nor permission, but he's right on the heels of Will's alleged affair with his 'trainer,' and cockily shoving a non-disclosure agreement in his face. You want to punch Jeff in the face (along with several of the characters on the show), but at the same time, he is driving so much conflict that without him you wouldn't be half as interested. And that, fellow Nashies, is what you call superb acting on top of excellent writing. (more...)

One thing you can never accuse SCANDAL of is having a boring episode. There seriously is not a second you can Look Away from the screen without missing something. 'The story is told in verse, densely packed with rhyme, which has to be spoken so that it sounds like natural language.' 'Much of the play concerns a battle between angels and demons.' 'There is little action in the play, just a series of monologues.' The descriptions are vivid, 'fingernails pierce an eyeball and drain it of fluid, a knife slices into a woman while she's having sex. A body implodes beneath the tires of a truck.' 'The play is filled with vivid, vulgar verse.' (more...)

by BWW News Desk - May 5, 2014

The Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre presents Blackbird by David Harrower and directed by Tony Estrella. It stars Madeleine Lambert and Jim O'Brien and runs from May 1 to June 1. Tickets are available here. Scottish playwright David Harrower's most acclaimed and most controversial play, Blackbird 'is theater at its most elemental,' says The New York Times. In a littered factory break room, 55-year-old Ray and 27-year-old Una engage in a confrontation so real and raw that you feel you should Look Away. But how can you? Fifteen years earlier, the two had a sexual affair...when she was 12. Ray has assumed a new identity and a new life following his imprisonment, while Una has not stopped searching for answers to her conflicting emotions. What emerges from the recriminations and explanations is a complex relationship that blurs the boundaries between love and lust, obsession and abuse. Uncompromising, shocking and surprisingly tender, Blackbirdwill leave you hanging on every word and every uncomfortable silence. For mature audiences only. (more...)

by Andrew White - May 4, 2014

Constellation's spell-binding production of Timberlake Wertenbaker's The Love of the Nightingale may have an old-fashioned name or two, but it is as timely a production as you will ever see. Director Allison Arkell Stockman understands that Greek mythology, like tragedy itself, is a canvas upon which we paint our darkest fears and ponder their meaning. The play paints a complex picture in which victims, bystanders and perpetrators compete for the audience's sympathy; and with Constellation's consistently strong performances, the journey is one of the most thought- provoking I have seen this season. by Wendi Reichstein - Jul 1, 2014

While riding along the freeway, drivers are often faced with the oxymoron of a car wreck on the side of the road. Though it is often gruesome and inappropriate to stare, it is equally as challenging to Look Away. No matter how shocking or repugnant, your eyes are glued to the scene, both attempting to understand what has just happened, and seeing what will happen next. Such was my experience at the Salvage Vanguard Theatre, watching the regional premiere of Silence! The Musical. Did I love it? No. But despite its raunchy lyrics and eye roll-worthy dialogue, its redeeming music and talented ensemble kept me in my seat for nearly an hour and a half. (more...)

More often than not in the coverage of war, while we are presented with ghastly images, the focus is on the larger strategies and total body-counts of battle. We rarely hear the harrowing stories of the innocent lives destroyed by conflict; even less frequently do we see how war impacts those who bring us those ghastly images and harrowing stories. In David Margulies' TIME STANDS STILL, two individuals are forced to deal with the physical and emotional scars left from years of covering war-torn countries. Last weekend the Rollins Players, a student-run organization, tackled this challenging work in the campus' intimate Fred Stone Theatre, with inspiring results. (more...)

As Americans we tend to love to witness a good familial car wreck. That's why dysfunctional family dramas are so popular (not to mention the hoards of people behaving badly on reality TV). But long before the Weston's of Osage County hurled their first insult or popped their first pill, George and Martha of Edward Albee's classic dark comedy “Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”, currently playing at the Seattle Rep, were knocking back two or three or 15 stiff ones and letting the secrets and venom fly.
