Marrying his reputation as a champion of contemporary classical music with his deep respect for legendary musical theater composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim, de Mare is building a unique piano repertory by commissioning 36 leading contemporary composers from the classical, jazz, theater, and film worlds to write short solo piano pieces inspired by Sondheim's music. Providing a behind-the-scenes glimpse of how a musical is created and the forces behind its creation, A CLASS ACT retraces the high and low points of Kleban's amazing career and explores how an artist's personal life can inspire or interfere with professional pursuits. The show integrates songs (which Stephen Sondheim said he 'wished he'd written') from widely different Kleban projects into the narrative, each number establishing a particular moment of insight and creating a study of a lost era in show business. The Public's HERE LIES LOVE Extends Through May 19

The Public Theater (Artistic Director, Oskar Eustis; Executive Director, Patrick Willingham) announced a two week extension today for the world premiere musical HERE LIES LOVE, with concept and lyrics by David Byrne, music by David Byrne and Fatboy Slim, additional music by Tom Gandey and J Pardo, and choreography by Annie-B Parson. Directed by Alex Timbers, HERE LIES LOVE begins performances on Tuesday, April 2 and was originally scheduled to close on Sunday, May 5. The rush tickets will be sold in the lobby of the Palace Theater (1564 Broadway). They will not be available at the box office. I had the pleasure of seeing Broadway vet Adam Pascal in concert at the Tilles Center on the Long Island University Post Campus. The cabaret style show was held in a separate, cute room to the side of the grand concert hall with a high stage and seating that reminded me of a mini half-stadium. He is currently touring in support of his latest album, Blinding Light, and is accompanied by the wonderfully talented Larry Edoff (they tour under the name Me and Larry). (more...)

Last week I had the distinct pleasure of speaking with Broadway headliner and SMASH Season Two Breakout star Jeremy Jordan about a wide range of topics, covering the vast majority of his career thus far in anticipation of the upcoming New York Pops Stephen Schwartz concert event, THE WIZARD & I: THE MUSICAL JOURNEY OF STEPHEN SCHWARTZ, on April 12 at Carnegie Hall. So, today, in this all-encompassing conversation, Jordan and I discuss his preparation for the sure-to-be sensational Schwartz event and provides analysis and ideas on the songs he will be performing as well as Schwartz's oeuvre in general.
