On Sunday evening, 54 Below celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the musical Grand Hotel on Broadway in high style with two performances crackling with energy and featuring a talented roster of performers including 13 from the original cast. Splendidly Directed (and Written) by Walter Willison, with Musical Direction by Alex Rybeck, Bass Accompaniment from Ray Kiddain, and Dance Supervision by Yvonne Marceau, the delicious production (one really can't call it a concert despite lack of dialogue) was fluid, polished, and imaginative in its use of the room. From leads to the chorus, voices were strong, commitment thorough. In the audience, Tommy Tune must've had a helluva time. We did. (more...)

Transport Group, the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and OBIE Award-winning theatre company, has announced its 2015 summer production Three Days To See, a performance piece conceived and directed by Jack Cummings III, slated to run July 12 - August 16 at Theatre 79. The cast includes Ito Aghayere (Orange is the New Black, The Liquid Plain), Patrick Boll (Mamma Mia, All the Way Home), Marc De La Cruz (If/Then, Allegiance), Theresa McCarthy (Queen of the Mist, Floyd Collins), Chinaza Uche (Bintou, The Day On Which a Man Dies), Barbara Walsh (Company, Falsettos), and Zoe Wilson. Transport Group's 2015 season will also include the previously announced revival of Once Upon a Mattress starring John 'Lypsinka' Epperson and Jackie Hoffman, slated for the fall. SPARKLE & CIRCULATE with JUSTIN SAYRE - the official monthly podcast of the International Order of Sodomites - has posted the seventh episode, which features an in-depth conversation with Carl Siciliano, founder of the Ali Forney Center, which provides shelter and services for homeless LGBT youth. The show is available on iTunes here.  Every June, Sayre's event Night of a Thousand Judys honors Judy Garland for Pride and raises money for the organization. Carl explains how the center was formed, who Ali Forney was and the challenges they face with fundraising. The first six episodes of the show - featuring interviews with Randy Harrison, Michael Musto, Frank DeCaro, Kim David Smith, Jeffery Self and R&B legend Sarah Dash - are also available. The Downtown Urban Theater Festival just presented playwright/director/actor Danny Hoch with the 2015 DUTF Playwright Masters Award at this year's Opening Night event at 40/40 Club (6 West 25th Street, NYC). The DUTF Playwright Masters Award is awarded to a writer that embodies the spirit of the Downtown Urban Theater Festival, founded in 2001 with the purpose of building a fresh repertoire of stories that echo the true spirit of urban life, while speaking to a whole new generation whose lives defy categorizing along conventional lines. Previous honorees of the DUTF Playwright Masters Award include Nilo Cruz (Pulitzer Prize winner for Anna in the Tropics) and Adrienne Kennedy (OBIE Award winner for Funnyhouse of a Negro). (more...)

Nominated for four 2015 Tony Awards, On the Town is still going strong at the Lyric Theatre, but performances May 7-12 were canceled so that the theatre could host NYC upfronts for Univision Communications Inc.
