Today in 1981, Dreamgirls opened at the Imperial Theatre, where it ran for 1521 performances. Based upon the show business aspirations and successes of R&B acts such as The Supremes, The Shirelles, James Brown, Jackie Wilson, and others, the musical follows the story of a young female singing trio from Chicago, Illinois called 'The Dreams', who become music superstars. It was nominated for thirteen Tony Awards, including the Tony Award for Best Musical, and won six. It was later adapted into a motion picture from DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures in 2006. The musical performance included songs of the performers' choosing as well of songs from A CHRISTMAS STORY. Patients and their families, nurses, doctors and staff enjoyed a one-hour session as well as a meet-and-greet visit with the cast following the performance. Partnering with the Australian Theatre Company in Los Angeles and G'Day USA, the young recipients will mentor with ATYP in Sydney for one year, culminating in the opportunity to travel to L.A. to work on a project with ATC and be profiled at the G'Day USA Gala in January 2017. Playwright, Donald Tongue of Londonderry, and long time actor with Leddy, has written a timely political comedy that examines the ups and downs of presidential campaigns. The story revolves around two candidates, Bob Roberts and John McCoy, who emerge as the winners of the Iowa Caucuses, and eagerly head east for the next round in the presidential election season - the first in the nation New Hampshire primary. Their political fortunes are on the rise, and another victory will put them well on their way to winning their party's' nomination. All would seem to be going well for the McCoy and Roberts campaigns, until an unscripted candid moment leaves them fighting for more than their political survival. (more...)

Anthony Giardina's Off-Broadway smash hit THE CITY OF CONVERSATION, about a Georgetown political hostess, makes its Washington, D.C. debut at Arena Stage at the Mead Center for American Theater. Following his direction of the 2014 world premiere at Lincoln Center Theater, Tony Award winner Doug Hughes returns to direct this political drama spanning three decades, from Carter's presidency through the Reagan era and ending with Obama's inauguration.
