by BWW News Desk - Sep 6, 2012

Acclaimed filmmaker Gigi Gaston's ROOM 105 - a new musical show starring Grammy-nominated Sophie B. Hawkins - is a thoughtful and entertaining tribute to legendary soul singer Janis Joplin. The show is a humorous, engaging, bittersweet, intimate and honest musical confessional. Janis brings the audience into her world and her life, and teases viewers about aspects of modern day pop culture, of which she is privy. A modern-day retrospective on Joplin's turbulent life, telling a story that reveals the iconic singer's thoughts on love, sex, fame and belonging. The show will premiere on October 4, the very night of the anniversary of Janis Joplin's death, at the Macha Theatre-- blocks away from Barney's Beanery where she had her last drink before her untimely death, joining the infamous 27 club. by David Clarke - May 8, 2013

Paul Hope's Bayou City Concert Musicals (BCCM) is proudly continuing their mission of bringing to Houston the best of the best from show business' yesteryears. Sometimes it is in the form of a forgotten or neglected musical, like their concert stagings of ONE TOUCH OF VENUS, THE SECRET GARDEN, and FINNAN'S RAINBOW. At other events, Paul Hope stages a cabaret of a composer's hits and erstwhile gems. Last Monday, BCCM premiered their cabaret entitled Alone Together: THE SONGS OF ARTHUR SCHWARTZ. Arthur Schwartz composed for the Broadway productions THE BAND WAGON, A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN, and others. He was also a celebrated Hollywood composer, writing music for THANK YOUR LUCKY STARS, the film adaptation of THE BAND WAGON, and others. (more...)

BWW Reviews: Nightmarish WOLVES Entertains at CelebrationBWW Reviews: Nightmarish WOLVES Entertains at Celebration
by Don Grigware - Mar 19, 2013

The short and fast-moving Wolves, which comes in at about one hour, is a smart, scary, thrilling theatrical ride akin to a nightmare. What in the beginning upsets, though, sooner or later yields enlightenment and even an odd sense of relief. The whole bleak argument of the city as wilderness and man versus beast adds lyricism, and with this, the message of True West rings prophetic. You may find yourself thinking about what is happening, but, a word to the wise, don't think too hard; better to take it at face value and enjoy! (more...)

BWW Reviews: Language and Love Take Over The Gamm in Sparkling THE REAL THINGBWW Reviews: Language and Love Take Over The Gamm in Sparkling THE REAL THING
by Robert Barossi - Mar 19, 2013

Writers spend their entire careers, perhaps their entire lives, trying to find the right words. The perfect words. Those which will elevate their writing from something ordinary and dull to a lofty place among the great works of literary art. Some concepts, though, can't be so easily put into words. Cannot be defined or explained in any way that truly does them justice. Loves is one of those things and the attempt to put it into words is at the center of Tom Stoppard's The Real Thing, currently running at the Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre. (more...)
