More than 50 works of art of diminutive size by 30 American and European artists working in a variety of media and techniques comprise the installation XS at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. With a title borrowed from the XS size label (for 'extra small') found in women's garments, the installation includes rarely displayed works from the Museum's collection that are usually kept in storage due to their tiny size. The installation, which challenges the adage "bigger is better," is on view in the Lila Acheson Wallace Wing through April 15, 2012. (more...)

Leigh Fondakowski, Founding Member of Tectonic Theatre Project, will teach a three-day intensive workshop on 'Moment Work,' the approach to dramatic creation that has led to the company's award-winning work including Gross Indecency and The Laramie Project. In this workshop, students actively engage with the elements of the stage - exploring lights, sound, costumes, movement, text, architecture and more - to discover their full theatrical potential and the poetry inherent in each element. The workshop culminates in a presentation of the Moments created over the course of the weekend. (more...)

Salomee Spleet is proud to announce the world premiere of a new translation by Chicago Dramatists' resident playwright Alice Austen of Marguerite Duras' La Musica, directed by Noemi Schlosser, April 19 - May 12. Opening/Press night is Thursday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. Performances are Thursday, April 19, Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Chicago Dramatists, 1105 West Chicago Ave. The production then moves for the remainder of the run (Saturday, April 28, Friday, May 4 and May 11, Saturday, May 5 and May 12 at 7 p.m.) to Alliance Francaise, 54 West Chicago Ave. Tickets are $25, which includes a complimentary glass of French wine. Opera San Jose continues its 28th season with Gounod's Romantic-era masterpiece, Faust. Inspired by Goethe's legendary story of the old scholar who sells his soul to the devil for eternal youth, Faust is one of the most performed operas of all time. Opera San Jose founding music director, David Rohrbaugh, conducts with stage direction by Brad Dalton, who recently directed Opera San Jose's company premiere of Mozart's Idomeneo. Faust will be sung in French with English supertitles. Eight performances are scheduled from April 21 through May 6 at the California Theatre, 345 South First Street in downtown San Jose. Tickets are on sale at the Opera San Jose Box Office, by phone at (408) 437-4450 or online at www.operasj.org. Faust is made possible, in part, by a Cultural Affairs Grant from the City of San Jose. Today in 1968, Exit the King opened at the Lyceum Theatre where it ran for 47 performances. The revival opened on Broadway in a limited engagement at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre, with previews starting March 7, 2009, opening March 26, and closing June 14. Directed by Armfield, the cast stars Geoffrey Rush (who won a Tony Award for his performance), Susan Sarandon, William Sadler, Andrea Martin, Lauren Ambrose and Brian Hutchison. It had previously been produced on Broadway by the APA-Phoenix Repertory Company, directed by Ellis Rabb and starred Richard Easton as the King, Patricia Conolly as Queen Marie, Eva Le Gallienne as Queen Marguerite, and Pamela Payton-Wright as Juliette. More than 50 works of art of diminutive size by 30 American and European artists working in a variety of media and techniques comprise the installation XS at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. With a title borrowed from the XS size label (for 'extra small') found in women's garments, the installation includes rarely displayed works from the Museum's collection that are usually kept in storage due to their tiny size. The installation, which challenges the adage "bigger is better," is on view in the Lila Acheson Wallace Wing through April 15, 2012. (more...)
