Tipsy Oxcart Drops New Album 'Upside Down,' 5/12Tipsy Oxcart Drops New Album 'Upside Down,' 5/12
by BWW News Desk - May 8, 2015

Tipsy Oxcart's evocative name comes from an old Bulgarian folk tale of a cart driver, hauling a precious load of grape brandy up a mountain—all while taking slugs from his cargo. The Brooklyn-based Balkan-inspired band has had similar mad treks up and down mountains, always with their sights on one destination: the open-eared and open-armed hospitality of a truly great party. BWW Reviews: Tyce Green Goes All The Way Live In TYCE GREEN LIVEBWW Reviews: Tyce Green Goes All The Way Live In TYCE GREEN LIVE
by Katricia Lang - May 8, 2015

I never questioned whether or not Tyce Green could sing. Rather, the question was, 'Can he carry a live show without an ensemble?' The answer is yes. At this point in his career, Green has a style of his own. Loose and earnest with a hint of humor. And he's a damn good interpreter. Even when I was concerned that his rock-tinged voice wouldn't fit the pre-existing style of a stong song, his spin would blow me away. (more...)

BWW Reviews: MARLEY: A Rare and Topical Event at Center StageBWW Reviews: MARLEY: A Rare and Topical Event at Center Stage
by Jack L. B. Gohn - May 18, 2015

Even though the historical Marley was probably mainly thinking about apartheid when he sang these words, you could not possibly sing them on a Baltimore stage these days without making the audience think of events closer to home. Bob Marley, very self-consciously a prophet, sang for his moment, but he sang as well for the ages, which includes our own. Center Stage could not have bought Bob Marley's topicality, but it could earn it, and did. One could believe it really was Marley up there, singing right to us. (more...)

BWW Reviews: LISA FISCHER Traverses Diverse Emotional Terrain in Exquisite Yet Meandering Show at BirdlandBWW Reviews: LISA FISCHER Traverses Diverse Emotional Terrain in Exquisite Yet Meandering Show at Birdland
by Remy Block - Apr 29, 2015

It wasn't so much watching a performance as it was bearing witness to an interior exploration, the chrysalis-busting conjuring of an artist stepping out of the shadows to claim her own territory. Lisa Fischer, the extraordinarily gifted vocalist featured in the 2014 Academy Award-winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom, took the stage at Birdland for a run of shows from April 24-27. She was joined on stage by the band Grand Baton, led by musical director and arranger JC Maillard, filled out by Aidan Carroll on upright bass and Thierry Arpino on drums. Maillard, sporting blond dreads reminiscent of Lisa Bonet circa Lenny Kravitz, mostly played his custom made Sazbass, but also picked up the electric guitar and played keys. The set consisted of eight songs, including encore, but the arrangements were elastic, allowing each song to stretch into jams, riffs and solos, traversing diverse emotional and sonic terrain.
