Playwrights Foundation and Cultural Services of the Consulate General of France/SF is spear-heading a major new international exchange project, Des Voix...Found In Translation, that supports the translation of vanguard French and American Playwrights and promotes their work to audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. The San Francisco festival features translations of new plays by three emerging playwrights working in France today. Plays by Marion Aubert (pink picture), Nathalie Fillion (blue picture), and Samuel Gallet (yellow picture) will be performed in English during a Festival, scheduled from today, May 25 through May 27, 2012, in a producing partnership with Z Space, a theater located in San Francisco's vibrant, cutting-edge Mission District and Deborah Taylor/FireMused Productions, LLC. While it may look through its world through "rose colored glasses", MEMPHIS celebrates a time when race music was beginning to catch on with a white, mostly teenaged audience. It's a crackling, amusing, and fast-paced show (book and lyrics by Joe DiPietro, music and lyrics by David Bryan) that takes you on a musical journey through the eyes of young Huey, a wannabe DJ, who gets his wish, and may get his girl, if they can survive the glare of the fifties, when mixing of the races was against the law. Does this all sound heavy? Well it's not, not by a long shot. Instead, it's a bouncy and bluesy production that's easy to take and listen to. It's currently playing the Fox Theatre (through May 13, 2012), and there's a reason this show is so successful, it's just edgy enough to appeal to the jaded, and it lightens the tone of this historical racist behavior just enough to succeed with the masses. Jeremy Shamos Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play for Clybourne Park 'I'd like to say I was so cool this morning and that I slept through the nominations but that's definitely not true. I woke up at 7 with kids and made them turn off their cartoons so I could watch the broadcast, which they thought was boring. The we heard my name called and we started jumping around and had a group hug, which included a whoopi cushion my daughter snuck in the middle so it turned into a fart hug. it still all feels a bit surreal and I'm still processing I guess, so much so that when I dropped my kids off at school a teacher pointed out that my shirt was inside out. But this is all very exciting and I'm just happy that the show got the nominations that it did. Mine is just icing on the cake.' (more...)

Saturday, April 14 at 7 p.m. Country Royalty: Jason Petty & Carolyn Martin Pay Tribute To Hank Williams & Patsy Cline ($69 & $66). Jason Petty, the 2003 Obie Award winning star of Hank Williams: Lost Highway joins forces with Carolyn Martin, the 2008 Western Swing Female Vocalist of the Year in tribute to two of country music's greatest legends. Tunes like Dream, Walking After Midnight, Someday, Sweet Drams, Hey Good Lookin', Jambalaya, Your Cheatin' Heart, I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry will be performed with impeccable musicianship! The show also features Petty's band on upright bass, steel guitar, fiddle, electric guitar & drums.
