BWW Reviews: THE BLUMEY AWARDS Recognizes Excellence in High School Theater

As an actor and a theater student, I take pride in the work of the theater department in my school. I went to the Blumey Awards this year, and I saw many students from schools all over Charlotte, who showed the same enthusiasm and love for theater. The Blumey Awards presented by Wells Fargo, is a great award event to showcase the talent and hard work put forth into each high school musical. This show was created by Tom Gabbard, President of Blumenthal Performing Arts, produced and co-directed by Ralph Beck, Education Director of Blumenthal Performing Arts and Michelle Youngs, Education Program Manager of Blumenthal Performing Arts. David Alpert to Direct Reading of BARNYARD FOLLIES , 5/28

Barnyard Follies is a new musical intended for young performers, written by Sam Carner of the Carner & Gregor team (Unlock'd, Island Song). Directing the reading is David Alpert (Associate Director of If/Then, The Best Man, A Trip to Bountiful) and musical direction is provided by Jason Wetzel (Assistant Conductor for After Midnight and numerous touring credits including Young Frankenstein, The Drowsy Chaperone). The cast features 24 young performers ranging in age from seven to nineteen and includes Sebastian Hedges Thomas, currently on Broadway as Young Charlie in Kinky Boots. The reading will take place at 6pm on May 28th at The Peter Jay Sharp Theater at Playwrights Horizons. (more...)

Paper Mill Playhouse concludes its 75th Anniversary Season with America's favorite musical, GREASE. With book, music and lyrics by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, Grease will be directed by Daniel Goldstein with original choreography by JoAnn M. Hunter. Additional songs are by John Farrar, Barry Gibb, Scott Simon and Louis St. Louis. Grease will play the Millburn, New Jersey, theater from May 28 through June 29, 2014. Breaking News: Paige Faure and Nancy Opel Set to Join Broadway's CINDERELLA in June!

Producers of the Tony Award winning musical Rodgers + Hammerstein's CINDERELLA, Robyn Goodman, Jill Furman and Stephen Kocis, have announced that Paige Faure, now appearing in Bullets Over Broadway, will be Broadway's new CINDERELLA starting June 13. Faure will also lead the national tour of the hit, Tony Award-winning musical when it begins performances October 10 in Providence, RI. Ms. Faure assumes the role following the 4-month limited engagement of Carly Rae Jepsen, which concludes June 8. (more...)

2014 Blumey Award Winners Announced

The third annual Blumenthal Performing Arts High School Musical Theater Awards culminated Sunday, May 18, at a gala award celebration where winners in 12 categories were announced and nominees for Best Actor, Best Actress and Wells Fargo Best Musical performed live on stage at the Belk Theater. NC Theatre Celebrating 30th Anniversary

On May 24th, 1984, North Carolina Theatre, opened its doors to their very first production, Camelot. Under the direction of De Ann Jones, the production starred Terrence Mann as 'King Arthur' and Sharon Lawrence as 'Guinevere.' Both actors have since gone on to have play countless other roles on stage, TV and film. The show opened with 825 season tickets sold and a total audience of 24,000. Upon Camelot's opening, The Raleigh Times proclaimed that 'Broadway had finally come to Raleigh.' (more...)

THE BOOK OF MORMON, winner of nine Tony Awards including Best Musical, has announced a lottery ticket policy for the National Tour, which begins Tuesday, June 24th at The Orpheum Theatre in Memphis, TN and plays a limited one week engagement through June 29th. In Memphis, the production will conduct a pre-show lottery at the box office, making a limited number of tickets available at $25 apiece (cash only). In Las Vegas, the production will conduct a pre-show lottery at the box office, making 20 tickets available at $25 apiece, including facility fee, which will be located in the first row of the orchestra.
