On June 13, 2014, Maine State Music Theatre inaugurated the first of a new series of talkbacks, called 'A Peek Behind the Curtain,' designed to share with its audiences the ingredients which go into putting together a successful theatre season. Broadway World local editor, Carla Maria Verdino-Sullwold, was invited to interview a panel comprised of actors, creative and administrative team members from their current show, The Buddy Holly Story, after which the floor was opened to the audience for questions. The event, held at the Curtis Memorial Library, drew a large and enthusiastic crowd, and the exchange was informative, entertaining, and in many ways, an inspiring tribute to the work the company does and to the theatrical profession these artists hold dear. The panelists were Stephanie Dupal. MSMT Managing Director, Kyle Melton, Props Master, Matthew J. Riordan, who plays Niki Sullivan and Tommy Allsup; Lore Eure who portrays Vi Petty, and Chari Burdick, Secretary of the MSMT Angels, a volunteer support group for the theatre. (more...)

Fletcher Foundation has awarded the Raleigh-based professional theatre a $37,500 matching grant in support of its upcoming production of The Iron Curtain Trilogy by the British playwright David Edgar. The Trilogy will be performed in repertory from September 4 - 27, 2014 and then moved to London's Cockpit Theatre for a three week run November 13 - 30, 2014. Instead of the standard fall musical this year, PPT will collaborate with the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra on a truly spectacular production of Les Miserables which will take place Oct 17-19 at Keppel Auditorium on the campus of Catawba College. Although Les Miserables is not considered part of the season, 2014-2015 PPT Season ticket holders will have the opportunity to purchase tickets to Les Mis now. With an array of ideas and images at its source, Reggie Wilson's Moses(es) takes audiences on a captivating journey in six performances at Jacob's Pillow, July 9-13. Wilson's precise, energetic fusion of modern and African dance is remarkable; Brian Seibert of The New York Times comments, “The dance vocabulary is rich: wide squats, jumps that spin and kick, Egyptian poses, arms rippling like bulrushes, heavy steps.” The choreography is married to a diverse score including music by Louis Armstrong, The Klezmatics, Amahlokohloko, Ngqoko Women's Ensemble, MaZarher, Aly-Us, Tiger, Bi Kidude, Southern Sons, The Blind Boys of Alabama, and traditional African-American spirituals “Wade In the Water” and “Eli, Eli (Somebody Call Eli)” sung live by the artists of Fist & Heel Performance Group.
