The new musical, AN AMERICAN IN PARIS, has targeted Broadway for the spring of 2015 following its world premiere in December, 2014 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. It will be directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon, making his Broadway directing debut. Featuring music and lyrics by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin and a book by Tony and Pulitzer Prize nominee Craig Lucas, the creative team also includes Tony Award winners Bob Crowley (sets and costumes), Natasha Katz (lighting) and Scott Lehrer (sound) with a musical score adapted and supervised by Rob Fisher. Bartlett Sher is creative consultant. Based on the Academy Award winning film inspired by the 1928 orchestral composition by George Gershwin, AN AMERICAN IN PARIS brings this classic tale to Broadway for the first time. (more...)

Just a few months ago, Michael Riedel reported that Bette Midler has been approached for a revival, for which she seemingly passed, telling interviewers that she didn't see herself wanting to carry an entire musical for 8 shows a week. Now, it might be Kristin Chenoweth's turn. Riedel wrote that 'Kristin Chenoweth has said she'd love to play Dolly Levi in 'Hello, Dolly!' in about 10 years. But her wish may come true a lot sooner. I hear she's in discussions to star in a multimillion-dollar Broadway revival within the next two years.' This Encores! Special Event, directed by frequent Sondheim collaborator John Doyle, and conceived by Peter Gethers, Jack Viertel and John Doyle, will run for seven performances, November 13 - 17 at City Center. Her first venture for the program was to help raise money for Broken Arrow Public Schools students to receive the opportunity of a lifetime. Directed by Richard Jay-Alexander and featuring pianist and music director Mary-Mitchell Campbell, this newly created, one-night-only engagement showcases Ms. Chenoweth performing a varied evening of music that highlights her incredible range-from works influenced by her early operatic and classical training in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma to hit songs from her starring roles on Broadway and in film. In addition to popular hits and classical selections, Ms. Chenoweth will perform new works, standards, and even works popularized by amateur soprano Florence Foster Jenkins. I'll drink what he's drinking. Because given the youthful aura and energy 75-year-old Broadway legend and nine-time Tony Award winner Tommy Tune displayed on Tuesday during the opening night of his debut run at the Cafe Carlyle (Really? After 55 successful years in the biz?), he must be knocking back martinis from the fountain of youth. In his aptly-named new show, More Taps, Tunes and Tall Tales, the 6-foot-6 entertainer (whom Fred Astaire acknowledged at their first meeting in the early 1980s by saying 'You're one tall son of a bitch') danced, sang, and, like a seasoned raconteur, regaled his audience with anecdotes about his colorful career, doing it all with the boyish charm he must have possessed when as a kid growing up in Texas he dreamed about being on Broadway. Stephen Sondheim and Wynton Marsalis will collaborate on A BED AND A CHAIR: A New York Love Story, a new musical event featuring Sondheim's music arranged and performed by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, announced Arlene Shuler, President & CEO of New York City Center. This Encores! Special Event, directed by frequent Sondheim collaborator John Doyle, and conceived by Peter Gethers, Jack Viertel and John Doyle, will run for seven performances, November 13 - 17 at City Center. Christine Baranski, Kelli Barrett, Walter Bobbie, Jeremy Cohen, Dalton Harrod, Randy Skinner, Shonn Wiley, Karen Ziemba,New York City Ballet Principaldancer Joaquin De Luz and American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Irina Dvorovenkowill star in Rodgers and Hart's On Your Toes, the final Encores! presentation of the 2012-13 New York City Center season. Directed and choreographed by Warren Carlyle, On Your Toes will have guest music direction by Encores! founding music director Rob Fisher and will play seven performances, from May 8 - 12 at New York City Center, W. 55th Street (between 6th and 7th Avenues). The "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" ballet, originally choreographed by George Balanchine, will be staged by Susan Pilarre, who served as a Ballet Mistress of the show's 1983 Broadway Revival. (more...)
