Plácido Domingo Selects Six Sings for LA Opera's Young Artist Program

General Director Plácido Domingo announced today that he has selected six singers to join LA Opera's Domingo-Colburn-Stein Young Artist Program in the 2016/17 season. The artists were chosen from 650 applicants, 300 live auditions and, ultimately, 28 final candidates. The finalists auditioned in April for a panel led by Mr. Domingo that included Music Director James Conlon, President and CEO Christopher Koelsch and Senior Director of Artistic Planning Joshua Winograde, who directs the program, along with Nino Sanikidze, head coach for the program.  (more...)

Out of a sense of homegrown spirit and pride, Nickel City Opera enlisted the 27 time ASCAP award winning composer, Persis Vehar to set a libretto to music based on the assassination of President William McKinley at the 1901 Pan American Exposition by Polish-American dissident and self proclaimed anarchist Leon Czolgosz. Commissioned by Dr. Judith Wolf and written by librettist Gabrielle Vehar, 'SHOT!' dramatizes the events before, during and after President McKinley's death providing the flavor of Buffalo in 1901 including actual songs that were written about the Pan American Exposition and its' relationship to Buffalo. Soprano Sandra Lopez will play the title role of Tosca, while baritones Jeff Gwaltney and Aleksey Bogdanov will play Cavaradossi and Scarpia, respectively. Devan today announced that soprano Emily Pogorelc will replace Rachel Sterrenberg as Chan Parker for the New York premiere of Charlie Parker's YARDBIRD, April 1 and 3 at the Apollo Theater. OPERA America Welcomes New Chairman & Members to Board of Directors

 OPERA America, the national service organization for opera and the nation's leading champion for American opera, is pleased to announce that Timothy O'Leary, general director of Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, has been elected the new chairman of OPERA America's board of directors. He has been involved with OPERA America since 2006, when he participated in Leadership Advance, one of the organization's professional development programs. He joined OPERA America's board in 2011. O'Leary was elected chairman at OPERA America's recent annual business meeting — held during Opera Conference 2016 in Montreal — where eight new members were also elected to the board and three current members were re-elected to three-year terms.  (more...)

Lyric Opera of KC Names New Resident Artists

General Director and CEO Deborah Sandler today announced the selection of the inaugural class of the Resident Artists Program. They include: soprano April Martin, mezzo-soprano Samantha Gossard, tenor Casey Candebat, baritone John Viscardi and pianist Kyle Naig. They will perform in various roles throughout the 2016-17 season on the mainstage at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts as well as at community outreach and education events. The artists were selected after a rigorous national audition of more than 100 singers. Led by Vinson Cole, UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance faculty member and one of the leading artists of his generation, Resident Artists Program signals the creation of the first-ever Resident Company for the Lyric Opera of Kansas City. American Composers Forum Announces Recipients of Champion of New Music Award

The American Composers Forum (ACF) Board of Directors has voted to present its 2016 “Champion of New Music” award to four outstanding recipients: Pianist and Contemporary Chamber Ensemble founding member Gilbert Kalish; Opera Parallèle's artistic director, conductor, and founder Nicole Paiement; new music writer, blogger and New Yorker magazine columnist Alex Ross; and conductor, pianist, composer and pedagogue Robert Spano at public ceremonies this year. The “Champion of New Music” award was established by ACF in 2005 as a national mark of recognition to honor individuals or ensembles that have made a significant contribution to the work and livelihoods of contemporary composers. On May 7th, the highly anticipated world premiere of The Shining - a new opera based on Stephen King's 1977 best-selling novel - by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Paul Moravec and librettist Mark Campbell, will be presented by the Minnesota Opera, at the Music Theater at the Ordway in St. Paul, Minnesota. With less than three weeks to go before the curtain rises, all 7,056 seats across The Shining's four performances are sold out and only standing room tickets remain for the production which runs through May 15th.
