Pacific Opera Project to Present LA CALISTO

To conclude its third full season, Pacific Opera Project will present 6 performances of the Los Angeles Premiere of Francesco Cavalli's La Calisto written in 1651. POP will return to The Ebell Club of Highland Park for this intimate and dynamic production after 5 sold out performances of Carmen this past March. Staying true to their 'POP-Up' formula of staging and rehearsing the entire opera in just over a week featuring some of the best talent in the country, Pacific Opera Project will have performers singing right at your table as you're served a bottle of wine and tray of appetizers. POP has added an orchestra with period instruments to the 'POP-Up' model for La Calisto and has kept the tickets at the ridiculously low price of less than $30 per person. The whole evening has a party atmosphere as guests enjoy food, wine, and entertainment either from their tables near the stage or from single seats in the venue. (more...)

Tobin Award for Sustained Excellence in Theatrical Design and Ms. Dryden was selected to receive the 2014 TDF/Irene Sharaff Lifetime Achievement Award for costume design. 'I'm not a warhorse kind of singer,' mezzo Susan Graham states matter-of-factly. 'A. I'm a mezzo. B. I'm not a character mezzo. C. I'm not a contralto. The iconic opera repertoire for mezzos, Amneris (AIDA), Azucena (IL TROVATORE), even Eboli (DON CARLO)--those kinds of roles aren't my stock and trade because my voice sits high and has a different timbre.' Well, what then is her milieu? It's the likes of Handel, who composed several of the arias she has been singing this winter at the Met, as one of the stars of THE ENCHANTED ISLAND, a kind of Baroque 'jukebox opera.' Lyric Opera of Kansas City closes its 56th season with Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus April 26, 30 and May 2 and 4, 2014 at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. This will be a new production designed by the Lyric Opera's Director of Design and Technical Production R. Keith Brumley and conducted by Artistic Director Ward Holmquist.
