Choreographer Trisha Brown has died on March 18th in San Antonio, Texas, after a lengthy illness. She is survived by her son, Adam Brown, his wife Erin, her four grandchildren – and by her brother Gordon Brown and sister Louisa Brown. Trisha Brown's husband, artist Burt Barr, died on November 7, 2016.
Canada's internationally lauded Baroque orchestra Tafelmusik has just concluded its 2017 U.S. tour. Travelling to eight cities across the country and in Puerto Rico, Tafelmusik performed a revelatory program titled 'J.S. Bach: Circle of Creation.' This interactive presentation combines text, music, and projected video and images to explore the world of the artisans – papermakers, violin carvers, string spinners, and performers – who helped J.S. DC Moore Gallery's new exhibition, Romare Bearden: Bayou Fever and Related Works, features a series of twenty-one vibrant collages from 1979 that Bearden conceived for a ballet that invokes African American traditions and the African presence that is deeply rooted in the Louisiana bayou near New Orleans, and elsewhere in North America and the Caribbean.
Pontine Theatre presents its original staging of The Story of a Bad Boy by Thomas Bailey Aldrich. This classic story of a boy's adventures takes place in the semi-fictional town of Rivermouth (Portsmouth NH). The production is underwritten by Optima Bank & Trust. Aldrich's boyhood home, now part of Strawbery Banke Museum, will be open to audience members following each performance.

The Contemporary Arts Center, New Orleans (CAC) is pleased to announce that New Orleans native Rashaad Newsome returns for his interdisciplinary presentation of Melange. Including films and recent works on paper, as well as the artist's vogue performance, this assembly of genre-bending works frames both Newsome's live performance and studio practice through the history of collage. Using layered constructions of formal material to investigate layered constructions of social identity, Melange borrows from dance, technology, gaming, and hand-crafted collage for a transformative presentation of art in motion. The visual arts exhibition will be on view in the CAC Galleries January 14-February 12, 2017.
Soviet and Mujahideen Uniforms, Clothing, and Equipment in the Soviet-Afghan War, 1979-1989 by Zammis Schein This book is the first detailed, illustrated guide to the military uniforms, civilian clothing, and equipment worn and used by Soviet soldiers and Mujahideen warriors in Afghanistan from December 1979 to February 1989. With over 500 images, this book presents front-line soldiers, NCOs, and officers in the main combat branches of the Soviet armed forces as well as Mujahideen warriors, actually ordinary Afghans, who were thrust by fate into the midst of a relentless guerrilla war against one of the largest regular armies in the world. Uniforms presented in this book are assembled in configurations confirmed by wartime photos. All photographs taken for this book are genuine service-issue or private-purchase Soviet and Afghan Mujahideen items.

What sounds almost too gruesome to be appropriate for a musical has over the years had audiences and critics alike arguing whether this is a musical comedy or opera. Since it's 1979 premiere it has been staged world wide by some of the most notable Opera companies in the world, from English National Opera to the Paris Opera and Lyric Opera of Chicago. An updated staging is happening this summer at the Glimmerglass Festival in Cooperstown, New York with noted Wagnerian bass Greer Grimsley playing the title character.
