THE BANANA MONOLOGUES Begins New Performance Schedule Today

Gregory Taft Gerard is presenting 'The Banana Monologues' Off Broadway, at the Acorn Theatre (Theatre Row) 410 West 42nd Street. The 80-minute relationship comedy stars John R. Brennan and is directed by Debra Whitfield. The play is written by John R. Brennan, Jason C. Cooper and Mary Cimino and features Scenic Design by Roman Tatarowicz and Lighting Design by Deborah Constantine. The show will begin its new performance schedule today July 20th, playing Saturday at 8:00pm; Sunday at 3:00pm; Monday at 8:00pm; Thursday at 8:00pm and Friday at 8:00pm. (more...)

Goodman Theatre's 2012-13 Playwrights Unit Presents Free Staged Readings, Now thru 8/16

Goodman Theatre presents four free staged readings of new plays developed in the Playwrights Unit, a season-long residency program for local writers who meet twice monthly with members of the theater's artistic staff to discuss their plays in progress. Out of this process emerges four brand new plays, which appear in FREE staged readings: Sleeping with the Prince of Darkness: The Imagined Pillow Talk of FBI Agent John O'Neill by Greg Allen (July 20 at 7:30pm); F(law)less by christopher oscar peña (July 21 at 2:30pm); Prowess by Ike Holter (July 21 at 7:30pm); and Ninth Man Out by Alice Austen (August 16 at 7:30pm). Auditorium Theatre's Summer Cabaret Series Kicks Off with Music of Kander & Ebb Tonight

'Come hear the music play...' this summer at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University (50 E Congress Pkwy) and the Katten/Landau studio (425 S Wabash, 4th Floor) when both spaces are transformed into an intimate cabaret hosting some of the city's most talented performers. The series kicks off in the Katten/Landau Studio tonight, July 20 with 'Life is a Cabaret - The Music and Words of Kander and Ebb' featuring Scott Gryder, Nick Sula and Phil Martin and continues today, August 10 with 'The Greg Spero Trio,' as Spero treats the audience to both original songs from his new album as well as everyone's favorite jazz tunes. The series culminates today, August 24 when the audience sits on the Auditorium's world-famous landmark stage to hear 'Chicago Music Legends' featuring Frank D'Rone, Judy Roberts and Denise Tomasello. The fifth annual festival will be presented now through August 2, 2013 at INTUIT - The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art, 756 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Chicago. Each play will be staged in a different area of the multi-room gallery, with drinking and mingling encouraged as audiences move from play to play. As part of the Palace Theatre's Triple Threat Performer Intensive, Broadway veteran and current cast member of the Tony Award-winning revival of Pippin, Stephanie Pope will be at the theatre Tuesday at 11 a.m. to chat with this year's program participants. Over her career, Ms. Pope has performed in Bob Fosse hits Big Deal, Sweet Charity, Chicago (on Broadway and the national tour), and the 1999 Best Musical Tony-winning tribute Fosse. Guerra: a clown play is a satirical physical comedy created by Mexico City-based company La Piara in collaboration with writers/directors Seth Bockley (February House at The Public Theatre) and Devon de Mayo (The Further Adventures of Hedda Gabler with Dog & Pony Theatre Company). Performed in three languages, Guerracombines slapstick, clown, dance, bouffant and farce to tell the story of a military outpost desperate for recruits, and the cannon fodder that a hapless General sends to war. This contemporary story of war's inhumanity is given a darkly humorous edge through the medium of clown. (more...)
