March 26
2:36 PM 2012

The stage is set for Starbucks 17th Annual Hot Java Cool Jazz toplay a special show at the Paramount Theatre. Proceeds from the night's performances benefit the music programs of the participating schools which this year includes: Garfield, Edmonds-Woodway, Mountlake Terrace, Roosevelt and Ballard. The show will be held on Friday, March 30th at 7:00 p.m. Since its inception in 1995, Starbucks Hot Java Cool Jazz has raised more than $250,000 for participating schools' music programs.

"Hot Java Cool Jazz is close to our hearts at Starbucks not only because it allows us to celebrate great young musical talent from our hometown and hear great jazz, but because it's also an investment in arts education, so valued by this community," said Rodney Hines, director of Community Investments for Starbucks. "We are extremely proud of this event and the impact it has on these outstanding local music programs."

This special night of performance, showcases the talent that is bringing Puget Sound jazz programs national accolades. Hot Java Cool Jazz participants regularly earn top honors at Essentially Ellington, the preeminent national competition for high school jazz held at the New York's Lincoln Center each spring.

"The Seattle Theatre Group hosts numerous annual programs that are designed to encourage youth arts development, exploration and increased access to performance experiences. Without corporate partnerships these opportunities simply would not exist. Hot Java Cool Jazz is a great collaboration between community partners who are dedicated to supporting young talent," states Vicky Lee, STG Director of Education and Performance Programs.

The critically needed funds raised through Hot Java Cool Jazz help the bands cover competition, equipment and travel costs. Total ticket sales (less production and administrative fees) are split among the performing bands. Last year's event raised $40,000 for local programs. In addition to Hot Java Cool Jazz, Starbucks supports local arts education through Seattle Theatre Group's More Music at the Moore and Dance This; and the recently debuted Little Big Show at the Neptune Theatre.

Last year's show sold out, so fans are encouraged to buy tickets in advance at the Paramount Theatre box office, online at or surcharge-free at select Starbucks stores, listed below for $20 (all ages). Proceeds from the tickets sold at the Starbucks store closest to each school will go to that school's music program.
