Playwright/Author Theresa Rebeck To Speak At Whidbey Island 2/3

The Whidbey Island Center for the Arts/Hedgebrook Literary Series presents An Evening with Theresa Rebeck at Whidbey Island Center for the Arts, 565 Camano Avenue, on Wednesday, February 03 at 7.00pm.

Theresa Rebeck's written works include all mediums from television, to film, theater and books. Past New York productions of her work include Mauritius, The Scene, The Water's Edge, Loose Knit, The Family of Mann, and Spike Heels. Omnium Gatherum (co-written, finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2003) was featured at the Humana Festival, and had a commercial run at the Variety Arts Theatre. Her newest work, The Understudy, premiered at the Williamstown Theatre Festival this past summer and is currently at the Laura Pels Theater at the Roundabout.

She has written for American Theatre Magazine and has had excerpts of her plays published in the Harvard Review. As a television writer, Ms. Rebeck has written for "Dream On," "Brooklyn Bridge," "L.A. Law," "American Dreamer," "Maximum Bob," "First Wave," and "Third Watch." Her produced feature films include Harriet the Spy, Gossip, and the independent feature Sunday on the Rocks.
In the spring of 2008, Rebeck became a novelist when her first book Three Girls and Their Brother was published by Shaye Areheart books. A compelling tale about "it" girls in New York City, this book received rave reviews. Three Girls won a 2009 Alex Award as one of the "10 best books of the year that appeal to teen audiences," and was chosen by Booklist as one of the top ten first novels of the year.

Ms. Rebeck will be joined by local artists Jason Dittmer, Deana Duncan, Eric Mulholland, and Vito Zingarelli for reading from her plays Mauritius and The Understudy.

Her most recent accomplishments include her Broadway debut in 2007 with Mauritius at the Biltmore Theatre in a Manhattan Theater Club Production. The play went on to a West Coast premiere at the Pasadena Playhouse this year and continues to be performed throughout the United States. Rebeck's Our House had a limited run at Playwrights Horizons this summer. In addition, Rebeck has written The Scene, The Water's Edge, Loose Knit, The Family of Mann and Spike Heels all at Second Stage; Bad Dates and The Butterfly Collection at Playwrights Horizons; and View of the Dome at New York Theatre Workshop. Mauritius was originally produced at Boston's Huntington Theatre, where it received the 2007 IRNE Award for Best New Play as well as the Eliot Norton Award. This year Ms. Rebeck was the honored playwright at the Great Plains Theatre Conference. Ms. Rebeck has collaborated with many stars of stage and screen including Tony Shalhoub, Stanley Tucci, Bobby Canavale, Patricia Heaton, Kevin Bacon, Tony Goldwyn and Julie White among others. Ms. Rebeck is originally from Cincinnati and holds an MFA in Playwrighting and a PhD. in Victorian Melodrama, both from Brandeis University. She is a proud board member of the Dramatists Guild and has taught at Brandeis University and Columbia University. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband Jess Lynn and two children, Cooper and Cleo.
