You know how you've always said, "I could've gotten that one" when watching those games shows on TV? Well, now's your time to put up or shut up as Theater Schmeater gives you a chance to immerse yourself into the inner workings of a TV quiz show complete with all the drama, backstabbing and, yes, prizes for a lucky few who can ring in with the correct answer before time runs out. The script may be a bit thin and predictable (although there were a few surprises I didn't see coming) but the antics of the cast and the interactivity with playing the game makes up for it and amounts to a good time.

In the world of "Game Show" our host, Troy Richards (Brandon Felker), keeps the questions and intrigue flying especially now that his contract is up and he's poised to renegotiate for more money and perks or he'll walk. Scheming Producer Ellen (Danielle Daggerty) has plans of her own that may or may not include Troy. And the rest of the crew, both veterans and newbies, are just trying to keep out of the line of fire and put on the best "Game Show" they can. Oh and yes, there's an actual "Game Show" happening during all this in which the audience can put their thinking caps on and win some highly coveted prizes.

As I said, there's not a whole lot to the story but what is there the cast manages to turn into a very fun show. Felker not only manages the swagger and lecherous nature of the long time star but also keeps more improvisational bits quite fresh as he interacts with the audience during the show and even a little bit beyond the show in his dressing room (wink, wink). Felker might have a good career as the next Alex Trebek ahead of him. Daggerty keeps you guessing, as the completely self centered producer, as to what her ultimate end game might actually be. Thomas Maier not only keeps the audience going but the scheming as the audience warm up guru, Steve, who longs to be the host and not the sidekick. And Ben McFadden couldn't be more endearing as the overly eager production assistant with a well engrained love for all things "Game Show". And the rest of the ensemble including Buddy Mahoney, Ben Burris and Stephanie Thompson keep the show and the plot clipping along with their multiple characters. And of course the audience members who add so many interesting surprises as you never know what they're gonna say.

So is "Game Show" a life changing bit of theater? No. But it is a solid evening of fun and a fine way to send off the Schmea as they venture beyond their little basement space after 21 years onto (hopefully) bigger and better digs. So, hands over buzzers and get ready to play, "GAME SHOW"!

"Game Show" plays at Theater Schmeater through August 17th. For tickets or information visit them online at www.schmeater.org.
