    This past week I saw two different musicals that have taken their inspiration from classic Jane Austen novels and, while completely different in size and scale, both have considerable merits. The first is in San Diego where Paul Gordon's to-die-for new musical SENSE AND SENSIBILITY is gracing the stage at The Old Globe.

    The Old Globe presents the West Coast premiere of Paul Gordon's delightfully romantic new musical SENSE AND SENSIBILITY, developed with Rick Boynton and presented in association with Chicago Shakespeare Theater, where it was commissioned and had its world premiere in April 2015. CST Artistic Director Barbara Gaines returns to the show as director of the Globe production. SENSE AND SENSIBILITY will play now through August 14, 2016 on the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in the Old Globe Theatre, part of the Conrad Prebys Theatre Center.     New Musical HOWARD to Receive Staged Reading This Week

    HH Productions, LLC, in association with The York Theatre Company will present a special staged reading of the new musical HOWARD, written by Frank Evans (Book and Lyrics) and James Scully (Music), directed by Jennifer Paulson-Lee, conducted by Jeff Saver and musical supervision/arrangements by Scott Cady.  HOWARD will be presented at Manhattan Movement and Arts Center (248 West 60 Street, NYC 10023) on Wednesday, January 27th at 1PM; Thursday, January 28th at 1PM; and Friday, January 29th at 1PM.     West Palm Beach's only resident professional theatre, Palm Beach Dramaworks, will continue its 10th Anniversary season with 'American Buffalo,' the classic American play by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Mamet, on Friday, February 19th (8PM) at their intimate downtown theatre (322 Banyan Boulevard). Special priced preview performances are slated for February 17th & 18th (8PM) and the production will play through April 4th.
