GOOD MORNING, THEATERATI for May 19, 2017
    May 19, 2017
GOOD MORNING, THEATERATI! Down in the right-hand corner of my computer screen, it tells me that its Friday, May 19 - which means that Memorial Day Weekend is just a week away! - how in the world did we make it from New Year's Day to Memorial Day in what seems to me to be like 15 minutes? When you figure that out, please give me a heads-up so I can better prepare for Christmas shopping! And that, of course, has me wondering what shows we'll be seeing during the next holiday season which, in turn, prompts me to ask the musical question: What's your favorite Christmas or holiday-themed stage offering?

International City Theatre presents a send-up of Chekhov's plays that is so completely hilarious, it doesn't even matter if you think Chekhov is just the name of that Russian guy on Star Trek. Mary Jo DuPrey helms a new production of the deliciously wacky, Tony Award-winning comedy Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike by Christopher Durang for a June 10 opening, with two low-priced previews taking place on June 8 and June 9.
BWW Review: DURANG DURANG Entertains Theatre-lovers in East Austin
    Apr 19, 2016
DURANG DURANG, written by the historical theatre writer/director/actor Christopher Durang, is a farce presented by Oh Dragon Theatre Company. Directed by Dillon Yruegas, presents a creatively staged and lively cast of players to a curious group of onlookers trying to piece together what the collection of stories and scenes mean. True to the theatre company's message of "creating authentic performance in both new and classic worksÂ…", DURANG DURANG does not disappoint. The writing style of Christopher Durang is a key element in bringing his plays to life, specifically within the genre of comedy. In the unconventional type of story telling that theater-goers expect from Mr. Durang, this show uses a collection of explosive parody and entertaining scenes, which are presented through farce and energetic execution by the cast. The scenes consist of 6 short one-acts presented with the solid 7 players. They represent unapologetic theatrical references that theatre fans will enjoy - understanding the punchline to the inside jokes. The endearing and exasperating scenes help some members shine and leave others trying to stay afloat. This cheerfully profane and crass comedy will confuse and excite the audience members trying to make sense of the farce.

BWW Reviews: Playhouse's VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE Would Make Chekhov Giggle
    Mar 23, 2015
I wonder if Jackie Nichols is providing on-site psychiatric help for those involved in the repertory presentations of Anton Chekhov's THE SEAGULL and Christopher Durang's VANYA AND SONIA AND MASHA AND SPIKE at Playhouse on the Square. Surely the veteran Irene Crist, performing double duty as Director of both the uber-heavy Chekhov piece and the giddy Durang parody, is on a schizoid seesaw as she veers from the serious to the silly - and the same might be said from the cast members who swap costumes and take their characterizations from one play to the next. Having just seen THE SEAGULL last week, I was eager to see how Durang's TONY-winning play would parlay all that Chekhovian talk about artists and pseudo-artists into something more laughter-inducing. However, rest assured that the talents involved in both plays rise (or fall, as it were) without any difficulty.
