A haunting folktale of sisterhood, enchantment, and salvation, Goblin Market is based on the widely popular poem of Christina Rossetti.

Told through the lens of the Depression-era South by NYC performer Jennifer Jewell with an original bluegrass score by Nashville based producer Chris Tench, the production is directed by Mark Cabus and co-directed by Patrick Mulryan.

After its critically acclaimed premiere in Nashville, JJewell Productions' Goblin Market will be presented at the 59E59 Theaters in New York between July 14 and 16 as part of the East to Edinburgh Festival. Right after that, the production will be heading to Europe. The one-woman show is an official entry in the 2017 Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, running for three weeks at the Royal Terrace.

Deep in the Smoky Mountains, Laura and Lizzie live an unspoiled rural life, drawing water every evening from a stream. Each twilight, with their buckets in hand, they hear the cunning cries of goblins calling children to their fantastical bazaar. Impetuous Laura is first to heed the goblin call, tempted by the lure of their forbidden fruit. But like so many temptations, there are fatal consequences and soon, the goblins abandon her to die. Prudent Lizzie finds her sibling withered and pale and resolves to make whatever sacrifice she must to save her sister.

Poet Christina Rossetti's Goblin Market weaves themes of sisterhood, addiction, salvation, and enchantment into a solo performance that is both relevant and accessible to all ages and cultures. Actor Jennifer Jewell commands the stage, giving transcendent life to loving sisters Laura and Lizzie as well as the barbarous goblins who plot to tear them apart. A long-time collaborator of Jewell's, Cabus sought to capture the music of his Tennessee mountain upbringing and believes producer/arranger Tench's original bluegrass score does so beautifully.

In addition to Jewell the creative team includes Mark Cabus (director), Patrick Mulryan (co-director, voice coach), Allison Plamondon (choreographer), Donna Rizzo (choreographer), G. Warren Stiles (lighting design), Chris Tench (original music) Brett Ryan Stewart & The Sounds Shelter (mixing and mastering), Adam Boncz (production coordinator), Bridge Coffman (assistant stage manager), Christine Economos (quilt), and Nancy Dement (costumer).

Goblin Market will run at 59E59 Theaters (59 East 59th Street, between Park and Madison Avenues) on Friday, July 14th at 6:30 pm; Saturday, July 15th at 2:30 pm; Sunday, July 16th at 2:30 pm.
