THE WEIR Begins Run at San Jose Rep Jan. 29

Conor McPherson's play, THE WEIR, will play the San Jose Repertory theatre beginning January 29th. The play stars Zillah Glory, Alex Moggridge, Andy Murray, Mark Anderson Phillips, Robert Sicular and is directed by San Jose Rep's Artistic Director Rick Lombardo. The will run through February 21st.

The show surrounds Valerie, who has moved from the city of Dublin to rural Ireland. Her real estate agent, Finbar, brings her into a pub where a group of lonely souls seek refuge from the bluster of the outside world. By telling stories, they create a haunting and poetic sense of family to break the silence of their isolation. When they discover Valerie has moved into a house considered "haunted," the tales of the supernatural begin. Small mysteries evolve into eerie astonishments as the ghostly storytelling soars into liberating confessions of love, loss and loneliness. Half-hidden wounds are revealed throughout an evening of drink and ego-driven rivalry for Valerie's attention, bringing these drinking buddies together in unexpected and deeply felt ways.

Conor McPherson has written The Seafarer, Shining City, Port Authority, Dublin Carol , The Weir, St Nicholas and This Lime Tree Bower. His plays have appeared on Broadway, at London's National Theatre Royal Court Theatre, Bush Theatre and Gate Theatre, among others. He was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play in 2006 for Shining City; nominated for the 2002 South Bank Show Award for Best Play for Port Authority; received the 1999 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Play, the Evening Standard Most Promising Playwright, the Critics Circle Award for Most Promising Playwright and was a finalist for the Lloyds Bank Playwright of the Year Award for The Weir; and was the joint winner of 1997 George Devine Award and the winner of the Meyer Whitworth Award for St. Nicholas. Mr. McPherson's screenplays include I Went Down for BBC/Treasure Films (Best Screenplay, San Sebastian 1997, selected at Cannes Festival, Edinburgh Festival and Sundance Festival) and MacIntyre (for Treasure Films).

Rick Lombardo is in his second season as Artistic Director of San Jose Rep. He was previously the Artistic Director for thirteen years at the award-winning New Repertory Theatre, the leading mid-size resident theatre in the greater Boston area. Last spring, he was awarded the Norton Prize for Sustained Excellence from the Boston Theatre Critics Association for his work at New Rep. He has also been the recipient of four individual Elliot Norton Awards and is a nine-time winner of the "IRNE" award for his productions of The Clean House, Sweeney Todd, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, A Streetcar Named Desire, Ragtime, Waiting for Godot and The Weir. His world premiere of According to Tip transferred to Boston's theatre district last fall. His New Rep production of Bill W. and Dr. Bob enjoyed an extended run off-Broadway in 2006.

THE WEIR runs January 29th through February 21st with performances taking place Tuesday at 7:30pm, Wednesday at 11:00am and 8:00pm, Thursday through Saturday at 8:00pm, Saturday at 3:00pm and Sunday at 2:00pm..
