The San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM) continues its collaborative undertakings with leading classical music icons this year during the Conservatory's Winter Term and Spring Semester, taking place January through May. SFCM welcomes back pianists Leon Fleisher and Garrick Ohlsson (ongoing residencies from this past fall), in addition to hosting a dynamic spread of other respected figures in the classical world, including David Gockley, Martin Katz, the Miró Quartet, Peter Pastreich, Patricia Racette, Ian Robertson, and Wolfgang Vlader.

Pivotal to SFCM's role as a hub of artistic excellence is its dedication to presenting world-renowned classical artists in residencies. By presenting concerts, giving master classes, and providing individual instruction, these artists show the breadth of their influence in multiple settings. Many of the events surrounding SFCM's artist residencies are open to the public.

Spring 2017 Artists-in-Residence

Garrick Ohlsson, piano
January 9-13, 2017 (Winter Term Residency)
April 19, 2017 (Spring Semester Public Master Class)

Eminent pianist Garrick Ohlsson returns to SFCM for multiple residency periods this semester. In January, he gives an in-depth workshop on Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 31, Op. 110 and offers precision coaching of solo literature excerpts. He follows his Winter Term residency with a special Pre-College master class on January 14. Additionally, a public master class in April sees Ohlsson instruct students in prepared repertoire.

David Gockley and Peter Pastreich, seminar organizers
January 9-14, 2017 (Winter Term Residency)

Former San Francisco Opera General Director David Gockley and former San Francisco Symphony Executive Director Peter Pastreich-revered icons in the world of classical music administration-offer a week-long, intensive seminar this January, covering topics ranging from organizational structure, finance, artistic administration, strategic planning, problem solving, education, fundraising, marketing, individual and union negotiations, and more.

Ian Robertson, director
January 9-14, 2017 (Winter Term Residency)

San Francisco Opera Chorus Director Ian Robertson conducts David Garner's new opera, Mary Pleasant at Land's End, in a workshop performance this January at SFCM. Robertson worked with the cast in October during the opera's early development and he will conduct rehearsals in the week leading up to the performance.

Wolfgang Vlader, horn
January 9-14, 2017 (Winter Term Residency)

A member of the Vienna Philharmonic's horn section, Wolfgang Vlader is one of the world's leading hornists. He comes to SFCM during Winter Term to give special instruction on the Viennese F horn. Through listening, playing in ensembles, and abandoning their modern double horns for the duration of the project, students will hear and feel how this special instrument relates to their playing of specific repertoire on the modern horn. Vlader's residency culminates with a Viennese F horn ensemble concert.

Patricia Racette, soprano
January 16-20, 2017 (Winter Term Residency)

Soprano Patricia Racette, a staple figure at the world's most prestigious opera houses, gives two seminars in an extended master class format at the beginning and end of her residency and workshops with students in both individual and group sessions this January. Following the theme of "integrative artistry," she will focus on working with students to bring out each artist's unique aspects. Patricia Racette's master classes are underwritten in part by D.G. Mitchell.

Miró Quartet, string quartet
January 17-19, 2017 (Winter Term Residency)

The Miró Quartet, noted for their impeccable musicianship and unabashed embrace of both canon and non-standard repertoire, visit SFCM to give a master class and concert this January. The Quartet also rehearses with chamber groups during this three-day period, a chance for students to engage with one of the most active string quartets on the concert circuit today.

Martin Katz, piano
February 20-24, 2017 (Spring Semester Residency)

Pianist Martin Katz, celebrated worldwide for his artistry as a collaborative pianist, comes to SFCM in February to work with voice students in a cooperative environment. He will give a public master class and teach students privately, offering his instruction in both individual and group settings.

March 30-April 1, 2017 (Spring Semester Residency)

Internationally renowned performer and pedagogue Leon Fleisher returns to SFCM for multiple residency periods this spring, giving individual coachings, master classes, and workshops. In a special collaboration with other departments, Fleisher will lead the Conservatory Orchestra in rehearsal and work with chamber ensembles during the February residency period.
