Mill Valley Chamber Chamber Music Society presents Trio Voronezh.

Renowned for performing folk melodies with Russian musical instruments, Trio Voronezh demonstrates virtuosity and artistic innovation with musical programs that also include classical, gypsy and tango dance music and a contemporary repertoire including Gershwin.

Concert material is arranged and performed entirely from memory by trio members Vladimir Volokhin on the domra (a three-stringed short-necked ancestor of the mandolin); Sergei Teleshev on the bayan (a chromatic-button accordion, with various registers); and Valerie Petrukhin on the double-bass balalaika (the three-stringed Russian national instrument, with a triangular body made of fir).

Classically trained in their Russian working-class city of Voronezh at Conservatory in Voronezh, the Trio Voronezh was formed in 1993. Their talent and unique musical style was "discovered" as they performed Bach in a Frankfurt, Germany subway station. The trio made its United States debut at the 1996 Oregon Bach Festival. Trio Voronezh has since made several tours of the U.S., earning praise and acclaim from critics and audiences alike.

The Oct. 16 concert program includes Concerto in D-minor (A. Vivaldi - J. S. Bach); "New York Tango" (R. Galliano); "Voronezh Cowboy" (V. Chernikov); and "Piece in Bluegrass Style" (Daniil Kramer).

Upcoming Mill Valley Chamber Music Society concerts in the coming year will feature Concertante on Nov. 13, 2011; Jupiter String Quartet on Jan. 22, 2012; Eroica Trio, March 25, 2012; Daedalus Quartet on April 15, 2012; and the Annual Marin Music Chest Young Artists' Concert on May 20, 2012.
