Just 100 years ago on April 24, 2016 Padraig Henry Pearce and fifteen other leaders of the Irish Republican Brotherhood led an uprising centered at the General Post Office in Dublin that initiated the long and troubled road to Irish independence. This year's Voices of Ireland is presented in honor of the brave men and women who sacrificed everything to set the course for Ireland to become a free republic.

Poems by Padraig Pearce and Thomas Mac Donagh will be presented, as well as favorites by William Butler Yeats and Brendan Behan about the rebel leaders. "With a name like Murphy it just seems right to pay tribute to the heroes of the Easter Uprising, some who were writers and artists themselves. In addition to the pieces with direct ties to this important history, the program will, as always, feature stories and music that reflect the beauty, the joy and the humor of the Irish people," said Artistic Director Veronica Murphy.

Eveline by James Joyce, once a student of Padraig Pearce, will be read by Rachael Van Wormer. To be fair and balanced, San Diego's favorite Brit, Ron Choulartan will read the hysterical The Widow Flynn's Apple Tree by Lord Dunsany, a loyalist to the crown who was injured in the uprising, fighting on the side of the British. The Powers of Imagination by Eric Cross, who was just a child in 1916, will be read by Walter Ritter. A special treat this year is tenor soloist, Kurt Norby, singing Danny Boy and Sally's Garden.

Other music, including some rebel tunes, will be played by The Celtic Echoes beginning at 7:00 pm. The program is rounded out by champion Irish Dancers Caitlin Edwards and Fernanda Sanchez.

Tickets are $30 with discounts for military, seniors and season subscribers of Lamb's Players or Write Out Loud. They can be purchased at www.lambsplayers.org or by calling 619-437-6000.
