Lambda Archives of San Diego Names Lillian Faderman As Inaugural Historian In Residence

Lambda Archives of San Diego is pleased to announce the establishment of a "Historian-in-Residence" program. This honorific title is bestowed upon a prominent or influential historian in the field of LGBTQ historic scholarship at the discretion of Lambda Archives. We are honored to name Dr. Lillian Faderman as our inaugural Historian-in-Residence for the 2017-2019 term.

"We are very honored to partner with Lillian Faderman as the first Lambda Archives of San Diego Historian-in-Residence," said Jen LaBarbera, Head Archivist. "Dr. Faderman has inspired my own work as a steward of our community's stories and I am thrilled to work with her to further the mission of collecting, preserving, and teaching LGBTQ history."

Faderman is a professor emerita of California State University, Fresno. She has received multiple honors for her work in lesbian and LGBTQ history and literature, including awards from Lambda Literary, the American Library Association, and ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives. The New York Times named three of her books - including her most recent book, The Gay Revolution - to its "Notable Books of the Year" lists. Faderman currently resides in San Diego with her partner, Phyllis Irwin.

"I am really honored to be Lambda Archives' first Historian in Residence," said Faderman. "I'm excited about helping Lambda Archives communicate the importance of knowing the tremendous history of LGBTQ struggles and victories, and of preserving that history for future generations."

The Historian-in-Residence position is for a term of two years from date of appointment and may be renewed for a second term upon mutual agreement. Lambda Archives of San Diego will provide Faderman with: research support including priority access to the Lambda Archives archival collections, library, and online resources; the opportunity to present public lectures; and the opportunity to present work-in-progress to a select audience. Faderman has agreed to: offer five free, public lectures over the course of a two-year term; conduct one free, limited-capacity, intimate seminar discussion of a LGBTQ history; and author contributions to Lambda Archives of San Diego's newspaper column.

Lambda Archives of San Diego, founded in 1987, is a community-based organization dedicated to collecting, preserving, and teaching the history of the LGBTQ community in San Diego and Imperial Counties and Northern Baja California.
