Now Playing Onstage in Rhode Island - Week of 1/26/2014Savion Glover & Company in Broadway" border="0" height="100" width="100" align="right"> Savion Glover & COMPANY
The Vets
1/31-1/31/2014
FirstWorks presents Savion Glover's STePz - his newest exuberant celebration of tap dance to sound - and sound to dance. Since Savion Glover first exploded onto the stage with his Broadway smash hit Bring In da Noise, Bring In da Funk, he has become one of the precious few artists to radically embody, redefine and expand their art form. In this production, Mr. Glover and his ensemble of dancers (TLHS) takes tap dance to new heights by fusing traditional music selections of the past with Glover's self-proclaimed tap style and energy of the future. STePz demonstrates Mr. Glover's incredible ability to perform the complexities of jazz phrasing-both bass line and melody-as well as wild improvisations-structure and deconstruction-from departure to return. FirstWorks audiences will have the opportunity to experience the versatility and virtuoso of Savion Glover's genius as a tap dance superstar and witness the seemingly impossible: a continuous flow of percussive taps with the subtlest of moves. Glover is a Tony award-winning hoofer, choreographer and producer. His numerous credits include the Broadway shows The Tap Dance Kid; Black and Blue; Jelly's Last Jam; and the films Tap with Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis Jr.; Bamboozled by Spike Lee; and Happy Feet, an Academy Award winner choreographed by Glover.

Now Playing Onstage in Rhode Island - Week of 1/26/2014John Denver Experience in Broadway" border="0" height="100" width="100" align="right"> John Denver EXPERIENCE
Stadium Theatre Performing Arts Centre
2/1-2/1/2014
During the 1970's, John Denver was the most popular entertainer in the world. He sold more albums for RCA than any other artist in their history. But to say he was an icon would be to sell him short. John was also a voice for the environment and a leader in global problem solving. There was something in John's music that transcended great melodies and poetic lyrics into an underlying sense of the human condition, and the longing we all feel for love and home. Chris Collins exhibits some of the same dynamic qualities that made John Denver so popular. Chris is an accomplished guitarist and vocalist. But besides having a vocal tone and natural delivery close to John's, Chris is a natural entertainer who has an uncanny ability to deliver John's music with authenticity and musical integrity. Musicians from John Denver's band have joined Chris in his concerts in Aspen and other locations. Chris and Jim Connor, songwriter of 'Grandma's Feather Bed' have written and recorded new music together. Chris has also performed with Cassandra Denver. Chris has twice been a Regional Finalist at the Kerrville Folk Festival, the most prestigious songwriting competition in the U.S. He is also the recipient of the Golden Eagle award for community service in Aspen, Colorado. Chris' concerts, which honor the music of John Denver, have been sought after by private and non-profit organizations, which understand the popularity and love for Denver's music.

Now Playing Onstage in Rhode Island - Week of 1/26/2014 FOOTLOOSE
East Greenwich High School
1/30-2/1/2014
One of the most explosive movie musicals in recent memory bursts onto the live stage with exhilarating results. When Ren and his mother move from Chicago to a small farming town, Ren is prepared for the inevitable adjustment period at his new high school. What he isn't prepared for are the rigorous local edicts, including a ban on dancing instituted by the local preacher, determined to exercise the control over the town's youth that he cannot command in his own home. When the reverend's rebellious daughter sets her sights on Ren, her roughneck boyfriend tries to sabotage Ren's reputation, with many of the locals eager to believe the worst about the new kid. The heartfelt story that emerges is of a father longing for the son he lost and of a young man aching for the father who walked out on him. To the rockin' rhythm of its Oscar and Tony-nominated top 40 score (the soundtrack album reached number one on the Billboard charts and has sold over 15 million copies!) and augmented with dynamic new songs for the stage musical, FOOTLOOSE celebrates the wisdom of listening to young people, guiding them with a warm heart and an open mind.Music by Tom Snow; Stage Adaptation by Dean Pitchford and Walter Bobbie; Lyrics by Dean Pitchford; Based on the original screenplay by Dean Pitchford; Additional Music by Eric Carmen, Sammy Hagar, Kenny Loggins and Jim Steinman

Now Playing Onstage in Rhode Island - Week of 1/26/2014 LAUGHTER ON THE 23RD FLOOR
Ocean State Theatre
1/29-2/16/2014
In January, Ocean State Theatre will help beat the winter doldrums with Neil Simon's Broadway hit, Laughter on the 23rd Floor. Chaos is king backstage at '"The Max Prince Show," a popular 1950s comedy-variety TV series. The stress of slipping ratings is eating Max alive, but his harried writing staff frantically scrambles to top each other with gags, while competing for the attention of the star madman. Inspired by the playwright's youthful experience as a staff writer with Mel Brooks, Danny Simon, Mel Tolkin, and Larry Gelbart on Sid Caesar's "Your Show of Shows," Neil Simon re-creates the mayhem, neuroses, nonstop gags and constant one-upmanship of a team of brilliantly funny social misfits.
