The beloved two-character musical, which has received more than 500 regional productions and 3,000 performances around the world, broke box office records for the Off-Broadway institution and ranks among the longest-running productions in Second Stage Theatre's 34 year history.
The new recording of THE LAST FIVE YEARS was produced by Jason Robert Brown with Kurt Deutsch and Stacey Mindich serving as executive producers. The 2002 original cast recording of THE LAST FIVE YEARS,the label's first cast album, remains one of their best-selling titles.
Jesse Green of New York Magazine calls The Last Five Years, "A gem of a show with jaw-dropping songs beautifully performed by Betsy Wolfe and Adam Kantor, who fill every daredevil leap and riff with torrents of feeling. Jason Robert Brown has put together a beautiful, emotional experience." Melissa Rose Bernardo ofEntertainment Weekly calls the score, "Stunning...far and away Jason Robert Brown's finest work," and Joe Dziemianowicz of the Daily News raves that the show is "graceful, gripping and break-your-heart beautiful. It's impossible not to swoon.
For fans of Brown's intimate two-person musical, there is a lot to love about the revival's cast recording. The music sounds cleaner and recording the vocals and instrumentalists at the same time ensures that everything pops with more vibrant life on the record. As Jamie, Adam Kantor sounds as if he graduated from the Norbert Leo Butz School of Voice, but he sometimes enunciates and swallows a vowel like Dave Matthews. Kantor's spirited voice is clean, making numbers like "Moving Too Fast" and "If I Didn't Believe in You" captivating. As Cathy, Betsy Wolfe uses her head voice more than Scott does, limiting the amount of nasal timbre on the disc. Almost everything that Wolfe does on this album is an improvement on Scott's 2002 performance, especially her beautiful "Still Hurting," peppy "I'm A Part of That," lush "The Next Ten Minutes," and sprightly "Climbing Uphill/Audition Sequence."
