Yellow Sound Label’s world premiere recording of MURDER BALLAD, the critically acclaimed new musical by Julia Jordan and Juliana Nash, is produced by Michael Croiter and features John Ellison Conlee, Rebecca Naomi Jones, Karen Olivo and Will Swenson.
A love triangle gone wrong, MURDER BALLAD centers on Sara, an Upper West Sider who seems to have it all, but whose downtown past lingers enticingly and dangerously in front of her. This sexy, explosive new musical explores the complications of love, the compromises we make, and the betrayals that can ultimately undo us.
The creative team for MURDER BALLAD includes: Mark Wendland (scenic design), Jessica Pabst (costume design), Ben Stanton (lighting design), Leon Rothenberg (sound design), Doug Varone (choreography), and Justin Levine (music director, vocal arranger and orchestrator).
The album opens with a haunting solo by the narrator, vocalized by Rebecca Naomi Jones. The creepily tender chords, sinister lyrics, and accumulated music references draw the audience in to the intriguing narrative. Throughout the album, Jones' earthy and sultry voice radiates and hypnotizes. Karen Olivo sings Sara, the Upper West Sider with a dangerously Downtown past. She drips sex appeal throughout the album. Powerfully masculine and utterly captivating Tom is wonderfully sung by Will Swenson. Swenson's rough around the edges and charming rock voice has never sounded better than it does on this album. Michael, sung by John Ellison Conlee, is plaintive and subdued, sobering the rollicking score. The capable, small, and abundantly talented band is conducted by Justin Levine and Cody Owen Stine.
