MASTERWORKS BROADWAY releases the Original Broadway Cast Recording of Bullets Over Broadway, produced by Doug Besterman and Frank Filipetti. Producers Letty Aronson and Julian Schlossberg present the world premiere production of the brand new musical comedy Bullets Over Broadway, written by Woody Allen and based on the screenplay by Allen and Douglas McGrath for the 1994 film. Directed and choreographed by five-time Tony Award® winner Susan Stroman, Bullets Over Broadway opened on Broadway on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at The St. James Theatre (246 West 44th Street). Bullets Over Broadway tells the story of an aspiring young playwright newly arrived on Broadway in 1920’s New York who is forced to cast a mobster's talentless girlfriend in his latest drama in order to get it produced.
With a keen ear and impressive skill Glen Kelly and Doug Besterman have smartly plucked well-known popular standards and jazz hits from about 1918 to 1930, giving the members of the cast a treasure trove of giddy, toe-tapping delights to sing in the show. Zach Braff sings warmly, and his bright vocals shine on snappier numbers. Betsey Wolfe captivates with her glittering vocals, owning numbers with tangible strength and self-worth. Marin Mazzie delivers consistently killer performances with delectable divatude and confidence. Heléne Yorke's nasal timbre sounds appealing to the ear while conveying her character has no skill, making the raucously tongue-in-cheek "The Hot Dog Song" a true triumph. Nick Cordero shows off his decadent jazz, delivering memorable and snappy performances. The show's large cast is well represented on the album. With catchy chorus numbers and splashy dance breaks, it is not hard to imagine how Susan Stroman's work as director and choreographer is filling seats at New York City's St. James Theatre.
