Modern dance choreographer Martha Clarke has won the prestigious $50,000 Scripps/ADF award, The New York Times reports.  The award, established in 1981, is presented by the American Dance Festival.  This year's Festival will present the premiere of Clarke's ANGEL REAPERS, dealing with the life of Shaker founder Ann Lee, on July 5.

Martha Clarke is a director and choreographer who combines dance, theater, the visual arts, and opera.  One of her best-known works is THE GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS, inspired by the painting by Hieronymous Bosch.  Her other works include VIENNA: LUSTHAUS, MIRACOLO D'AMORE, ENDANGERED SPECIES, AN UNCERTAIN HOUR, THE HUNGER ARTIST, and VERS LA FLAMME.  She has also directed various operas and theater works.  Clarke has previously received a MacArthur Award, a Drama Desk Award, and two grants from the Guggenheim Foundation, among other honors.

Heralded as "One of the nation's most important institutions" (New York Times), the American Dance Festival's sustained record of creative achievement is indivisible from the history of modern dance. Since 1934, the ADF has remained committed to serving the needs of dance, dancers, choreographers, and professionals in dance-related fields. Remaining true to the goals of its founding artists, the ADF's programs are developed based on its mission: to encourage and support the creation and presentation of new modern dance work by both established and emerging choreographers; to preserve our modern dance heritage through continued presentation of classic works, as well as through archival efforts; to build wider national and international audiences for modern dance; to enhance public understanding and appreciation of the art form and its cultural and historical significance; to provide a sound scientific/aesthetic base for professional education and training of young dancers and a forum for integrating and disseminating information on dance education.  The American Dance Festival is located in Durham, North Carolina.  To learn more about the ADF, visit the official website.
