The untimely passing of one of music's most innovative and daring performers shook the music industry and the world. On April 21, 2016 Prince passed away in his Paisley Park residence at the age of 57. Now a year later, his friends and bandmates gather to honor his legacy.

Musicians that have shared the stage with Prince and performed with him for years will perform the When Doves Cry:a Tribute to Prince and Purple Rain concert on May 5th. The entire Purple Rain album performed by Prince band alumni with students of Catawba College Vernaculars will fill the evening with incredible music. The tribute will take place on Friday, May 5th in the parking lot of New Sarum Brewery Company beginning at 7:00pm. Not only will there be great music, but local food trucks will be available as well as craft beer and picnic areas to complete this parking lot party experience.

The Vernaculars' performance of the entire Purple Rain album live will be made even more special by the attendance of Adrian Crutchfield, the last sax player to perform and record with Prince, touring the world and being featured on Prince's last three albums. He currently teaches at Catawba College but has also toured with acts such as Lionel Ritchie, Bette Midler, and Cee Lo Green.

The iconic Purple Rain album was released June 25, 1984 and transcended genres. Purple Rain was ranked the 15th greatest album of all time in 1993 by Time magazine and Rolling Stone ranked it the second-best album of the 1980s and 76th on their list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time". The album was certified thirteen-times platinum, making it a diamond record.

The When Doves Cry: a Tribute to Prince and Purple Rain concert will feature top students from Catawba College's nationally recognized popular music degree program. They will perform "When Doves Cry," "Let's Go Crazy," "I Would Die 4 U" along with the title song, "Purple Rain" and all the other classic hits from the album.
