The Loves Me, the 1963 Tony Award-winning musical, with book by Joe Masteroff, music by Jerry Bock, and lyrics by Sheldon Harnick, opens November 7, 2014 at Lakewood Theatre Company. BroadwayWorld brings you a first look below!
Georg (Paul Angelo) and Amalia (Dru Rutledge) are two feuding clerks in a 1930s European parfumerie who secretly find romance with anonymous pen pals, unaware they are corresponding with each other. By turns funny, smart, honest, and sentimental, She Loves Me features the show-stopping "Ice Cream," "Twelve Days to Christmas," and the popular title tune, "She Loves Me," all from the same songwriting team famous for Fiddler on the Roof.
She Loves Me is a warm romantic comedy with endearing innocence and a touch of old-world charm. It is as relevant as ever in this age of internet romances. The New York Times called She Loves Me a "continuously melodic evening of sheer enchantment and complete escape."

Director Tobias Andersen describes the play as a light, family-friendly romantic musical comedy with a touch of holiday nostalgia and elegance. "The writing is really witty. It's so different in this day and age with internet dating, where people only show themselves in the best light," said Andersen. "The characters of Amalia and Georg know each other first in bad light, and come together despite that."
Performances continue through December 21, 2014 playing Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights at 7:30 PM, two Wednesday performances (Nov. 19, Dec. 10) at 7:30 PM, Sunday evenings at 7:00 PM (Nov. 9, 16, 23), and Sunday matinees at 2:00 PM (Nov. 16, 30, Dec. 7, 14, 21). In 1963, the play was produced as a full Broadway musical with book by Joe Masteroff and was titled She Loves Me. The production had music by Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock (Fiorello!, Fiddler on the Roof, The Apple Tree). The cast featured Daniel Massey as Georg Nowack, Barbara Cook as Amalia Balash, Barbara Baxley as Ilona Ritter, Jack Cassidy as Stephen Kodaly, Nathaniel Frey as Ladislav Sipos, Ralph Williams as Arpad Laszlo and Ludwig Donath as Mr. Maraczek.
