Photo Flash: 1776 at Lakewood Theatre Company

Move over Hamilton. There is a new, well older, historical musical coming to town...

In a year with a rollicking presidential election, and the 240th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, it seems fitting for Lakewood Theatre Company to present 1776, the Tony Award-winning musical about how the founding fathers drafted the Declaration of Independence and gave birth to a new nation. Political maneuvering provides the heart and soul of 1776; the road to accord seems as fraught with obstacles as any in Congress today. It is a show that will remind us how far America has come and how little we've changed.

With music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards and book by Peter Stone, the show presents the men and women behind the document in a much lighter tone. Through song, dance, and mildly irreverent comedy, this historically accurate musical, which was a partial inspiration for the current Broadway hit, Hamilton, brings to life John Adams (Darius Pierce), Benjamin Franklin (Mark Pierce), Thomas Jefferson (Adam Elliot Davis), Richard Henry Lee (Matthew Hayward), John Dickinson (Heath Koerschgen) and the rest of the Second Continental Congress in an inspiring and imaginative way.

Performances begin September 9 and continue through October 16, 2016, playing Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights at 7:30 PM, two Wednesday performances (Sept. 28, Oct 12) at 7:30 PM, Sunday evenings at 7:00 PM(Sept. 11, 25, Oct. 9), and Sunday matinees at 2:00 PM (Sept. 18, Oct. 2, 9, and 16). The theatre is located at Lakewood Center for the Arts, 368 S. State St. in Lake Oswego. Ticket prices are $37 for adults and $35 for seniors.
