An undaunted young journalist; an iconic '80s student activist; and an intellectual rebel--University of the Philippines (UP) alumnus Leandro Legara Alejandro was all that and more!

Manila, Philippines, September 2, 2013--Revisiting scenes from the tumultuous Martial Law era in the Philippines to the People Power Revolution, up to Leandro Legara Alejandro's untimely death in 1987, the play "Lean," based on respected singer/songwriter Gary Granada's "Lean, the Musical" (1997), runs at UP's Dalisay Aldaba Recital Hall from Monday, September 9 to Saturday, September 21.

"Lean," produced by UP Repertory Company (UP Rep), is directed by UP Rep alum Kathryn Manga. The show also features new musical arrangements by Karl Ramirez.

Based on the life and times of Alejandro (July 10, 1960-September 19, 1987), "Lean" tells the story of one of the most influential student leaders in recent memory. The play follows Alejandro's struggles and triumphs as a writer for the Philippine Collegian, UP's official student publication, and as a student activist during the Martial Law era. His exploits--inside and outside the UP campus--had made notable contribution to reclaiming democracy from former Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos' dictatorial rule.
