Atlantis Productions' THE 12TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE returns to Manila for a third round of performances from December 4 to 13, 2009 at the Carlos P. Romulo Auditorium, RCBC Plaza, Makati City. 

The musical comedy has already had two successful runs in Manila (March and July 2009), and one in Singapore (August 2009). 

SPELLING BEE is a one act musical with music and lyrics by Tony winner William Finn (March of the Falsettos, Falsettoland), and book by another Tony winner and New York University (NYU) Tisch School instructor Rachel Sheinkin.

The musical happens at a fictional spelling bee in Putnam County, New York.  Six kids troubled by puberty face off in the battle of their lives.  These youngsters (adult actors playing kids) compete against each another as well as with the members of an interactive audience.  Three adult characters help manage the proceedings: Rona Lisa Peretti, a nostalgic former spelling bee winner; Douglas Panch, a mildly insane vice principal; and Mitch Mahoney, an ex-convict who is about to complete his community servIce To the State of New York.

No two SPELLING BEE performances are ever alike, as the production shares the stage with two volunteer audience members, and two surprise local celebrity guest spellers. Theatre and television personalities who have made appearances in the past included Tony winner Lea Salonga, Eugene Domingo, Jett Pangan (Spring Awakening, Urinetown), Erik Santos, Mark Bautista, Cherie Gil (Doubt, Master Class), and KC Concepcion (Beauty and the Beast). 

Heads up:  There will be a special "for adults only" performance on December 5, 2009, which will feature "for adults only" words and sentences!

Stage actors Cathy Azanza-Dy (Into the Woods, Once On This Island), Pheona Baranda (Cabaret), Johann Dela Fuente (Footloose, Joseph the Dreamer), Carla Guevarra-Laforteza (Miss Saigon, Avenue Q), Lorenz Martinez (Man of La Mancha, Beauty and the Beast), Noel Rayos (Hairspray, Company), Felix Rivera (Avenue Q, Songs for a New World), Joel Trinidad (Avenue Q, Proof) and Shiela Valderrama-Martinez are part of the cast.

SPELLING BEE in Manila features stage direction by Bobby Garcia (Cinderella, Dogeaters); choreography by Chari Arespacochaga (Spring Awakening, Altar Boyz); set design by Tuxqs Rutaquio; lighting design by Johnsy Reyes;  costume design by Twinkle Zamora; vocal coaching by ManMan Angsico (Rent, Doubt); and musical direction by Jojo Malferari (Spring Awakening, Altar Boyz).
