Terrence McNally's MOTHERS AND SONS Set to Play Philadelphia Theatre Company in February

Philadelphia Theatre Company announced today the fifth show of its 2014-2015 season will be the Tony-nominated drama Mothers and Sons byTerrence McNally. Mothers and Sons, which will run February 6-March 8, 2015, rounds out an exciting 40th Anniversary Season of superb contemporary theatre that also includes Lisa D'Amour's disturbing yet bracingly funny drama Detroit, the Tony Award nominated Outside Mullingar by Oscar-winning writer John Patrick Shanley, brownsville song (b-side for tray), the runaway hit of this year's Humana Festival of New American Plays, by rising playwrightKimber Lee, and Joe Kinosian and Kellen Blair's musical whodunit Murder for Two, nominated for this year's Drama League and Outer Critics Circle Awards.

In Mothers and Sons, a woman pays an unexpected visit to the apartment of her late son's partner, who is now married to another man and has a young son. A 2014 Tony Award Nominee for Best Play, this eloquent, timely, and intensely resonant play is a moving reflection on a changed America and our ever-evolving understanding of family.

"PTC's relationship with Terrence McNally goes back 25 years, covering not only the world premiere productions of the Tony Award-winning Master Class, Some Men, Unusual Acts of Devotion, and Golden Age but also the Philadelphia premieres of Love! Valour! Compassion!, Lips Together, Teeth Apart, and Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune. In 2012, PTC established the Terrence McNallyNew Play Award which is given annually to a play that celebrates the transformative power of art."

Terrence McNally is a recipient of the Dramatists Guild Lifetime Achievement Award. He has won four Tony Awards for his plays Love! Valour! Compassion! and Master Class and his musical books for Kiss of the Spider Woman and Ragtime as well as two Guggenheim Fellowships, a Rockefeller Grant, the Lucille Lortel Award, the Hull-Warriner Award, and a citation from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He won an Emmy Award for his television film Andre's Mother. The Kennedy Center recently produced three of his plays under the title Terrence McNally's Nights at the Opera: Master Class, The Lisbon Traviata, and Golden Age. His play And Away We Go premiered at the Pearl Theatre Company in last November. This fall a Broadway revival of McNally's It's Only A Play will feature a starry cast including Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. In 1996 he was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame.
