Matt Bergman, James Davis and More Set for THE NOBODIES OF COMEDY, 5/4

For the tenth year, the Nobodies of Comedy visit the State Theatre, Friday, May 4 at 8 PM. 

Matt Bergman has been performing at clubs and colleges since he was in college pursuing a degree in criminal justice. After graduating, he realized he was afraid of criminals and decided stand-up comedy was the way to go. Since then he has become one of the most sought after comedians in the country. He has been the opening act for big name talent such as Dave Attell, Jeffrey Ross, Bill Burr, and Jon Lovitz. Recently he was asked to open for Mike Birbiglia on a leg of his Comedy Central Live Tour, which included stops in SC, NC, and VA. Since then he has toured non-stop across the United States and Canada and recently filmed his first comedy special for Bite TV in Toronto last June and in 2011 his first comedy cd/dvd is being released on Robby Takacs, from the Goo Goo Dolls, Good Charamel Records. He is a favorite amongst club owners and audiences alike with his sarcastic style and absurd observations.

James Davis
James has exploded onto the comedy scene, and has quickly captured everyone’s attention in the comedy world. James is currently a writer on the updated version of the groundbreaking FOX sketch comedy series “In Living Color”, that will air in the Spring of 2012. He was recently featured on “Russell Simmons Presents Stand-Up at the El Rey”, as well as written for the BET Awards & BET Hip Hop Awards.
James’s parody Baracka Flacka Flames – Head of the State was named #2 viral video of 2010 by AOL and has over 8 million views on the web. The popular spoof even landed James on Inside Edition and The New York Times. Since then, James has released numerous viral sketches on YouTube and Funny Or Die where he is currently developing a half-hour sketch pilot.

CHRIS DOUCETTE
This world is full of surprises, and the stand-up comedy of Chris Doucette is no exception. Weighing in at 110 pounds and measuring under 5’7″, Chris is living proof that big things really do come in small packages. Chris is the son of a trucker and the first in his family to graduate college. He’s got a blue collar attitude with an ivy league wit. Chris also represents the next generation of gay comedians. His audience knows he’s gay and he uses it to full advantage without resorting to stereotypes or cliches. His humor is current, topical, and completely original. Said one audience member, “I hate stand-up comedy – but you, you made me laugh out loud!”
In 2011, Chris won 1st place at the Snubfest Comedy Festival in Chicago. The Advocate referred to him as “The Best of LGBT Comedy.” He has performed for colleges all over the country and recently received a standing ovation from the students at Florida Tech. Chris has performed on the largest cruise ship in the world and he was selected as a feature comic at the Michigan Comedyfest, Charleston Comedy Festival, Baltimore Comedy Festival, Baltimore Artscape Festival, and headlined the Ganymede Arts Festival. He has performed on FOX, NPR, The Joey Reynolds Show, WTOP, and WAMU. He has appeared in The Washington Post, The Washington Post Express, Miami Sun-Sentinel, Metro Weekly, Time Out New York, Next Magazine, New York Post, and the Village Voice. PHIL HANLEY
Phil started standup comedy by performing at open mics around Vancouver, often in between bands at music venues. In these establishments he discovered and honed his unique blending of material and crowd interaction that makes no two of his performances the same. Phil’s style can best be described as unpredictably reflective, delivered with sharp accuracy, and rooted in the grand tradition of joke-telling. Phil’s performances at The 2008 Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal brought him international acclaim. His jokes were recognized in the Montreal Gazette’s annual Best jokes of the Festival. He was also named one of the five comics creating a buzz at the festival by The Hollywood Reporter and rewarded with a featured segment on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Phil’s other credits include appearances at the Halifax Comedy Festival, Global’s Vancouver International Comedy Fest, CBC and XFM satellite radio, and his own television special on the CTV and Comedy Network - not to mention his win in the 2007 Vancouver’s Funniest comic competition. And finally, one of Phil’s most cherished accomplishments is being a credited screenwriter for Don Knotts’ final film project. In recent years Phil has enjoyed touring Canada coast to coast, but this spring he plans to relocate to New York City and his parents plan to finally convert his childhood bedroom into a den.

ANDREW SCHLTZ
Andrew is a native New Yorker known for his edgy, street-smart, unapologetic comedy that relates so well to the newest generation of comedy fans; his youthful energy makes him irresistible to the audience. A regular in the New York comedy circuit, Andrew has performed at Gotham Comedy Club, Caroline's, Comedy Cellar and more. He’s also performed alongside the country’s top acts such as Dave Chappelle,
Dave Attell, Louis CK, Damon Wayans, Tracy Morgan, Bill Burr, Judah Friedlander and more. Andrew is currently writing and commentating on MTV’s new show clip show, “Guy Code,” which premieres next month. He also hosts “Certified.” on the Music Choice channel, and is credited with bringing the show to the #1 spot in the history of the network. His other credits include two pilots for BET: “The Rewind.” And “The Blog Report” MTV’s “New Year’s Eve Bash” and a writing/voiceover gig on the new stop-motion animated series “It’s All Elementary”.
