Signature Theatre's CABARET, directed by Signature Associate Artistic Director Matthew Gardiner(Signature's Sunday in the Park with George, Dreamgirls), begins tonight, May 12 in the MAX Theatre, where it will play through June 28. The John Kander and Fred Ebb classic is the final production of Signature Theatre's 25th Anniversary. The production will star Taylor (NBC's Smash, Broadway's Rock of Ages) as The Emcee and Weed (Off-Broadway's Heathers: The Musical, Found) as Sally Bowles. Chicago Shakespeare Theater (CST) announces William Shakespeare's Henry VIII, the first professional Chicago production in 400 years since its debut at Shakespeare's Globe in London. Staged by Artistic Director Barbara Gaines in CST's Courtyard Theater April 30-June 16, 2013, Henry VIII features a celebrated company of artists that includes Gregory Wooddell in the title role and Christina Pumariega as Anne Boleyn. The Acting Company features an ensemble of veteran CST actors which includes Kate Buddeke, David Darlow, Kevin Gudahl, Scott Jaeck, Ora Jones, David Lively and Mike Nussbaum. Girl Crazy, the Gershwin's fanciful depression-era musical of 1930, is the tale of a sophisticated New Yorker (Chris Diamantopoulos) marooned in a dusty Western cow town with no one who understands him but the Yiddish-speaking cabbie (Wayne Knight) who brought him there and no one to love but the only woman (Becki Newton) within 50 miles. The show gave birth to one of the all-time flashiest Broadway scores, featuring 'I Got Rhythm,' 'Embraceable You,' 'But Not for Me' and 'Bidin' My Time,' among others. Girl Crazy opened at the Alvin Theatre on October 14, 1930 and ran for 272 performances.
