Paul Jost Debuts At Mezzrow Jazz Club

Paul Jost, the unique vocalist and arranger often described as a 'passionate storyteller', performs at Mezzrow Jazz Club, 163 W 10th St in New York, with his quartet on Tuesday, August 21, 8 and 9:30 p.m. shows. Paul is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger but it is his work as a vocalist that makes him a standout. Performing music from his soon-to-be-released album, 'Simple Life,' he is joined by his quartet, the musicians on his album … Jim Ridl-piano, Dean Johnson-bass and Tim Horner-drums. Civic Ensemble completes this year's Civic Acts repertory with a World Premiere of Saviana Stanescu's Bee Trapped Inside The Window opening tonight at 8:30pm at the Black Box Theatre @ LACS, 111 Chestnut Street, Ithaca NY. Stanescu's play, a Civic Commission, is a meditation on loneliness, identity and complicity that examines modern day domestic slavery's impact on the lives of three ethnically diverse women in the leafy suburbs of Connecticut. The production, directed by the actor/director Vernice P. Miller (All God's Chillun Got Wings), features Janilya Baizack, Sarah K. Chalmers (Slashes of Light), and Erin Lockett.

Dan Levinson's Midsummer Night's Jazz Party returns to the Bickford Theatre as part of Summer JazzFest for one night only on Thursday, August 2 at 7:30 pm. For his annual appearance at the popular festival, Levinson dispenses with music scores and stands for a jam session in the tradition of the legendary jazz clubs of the forties and fifties such as Eddie Condon's and Nick's. Joining the popular clarinetist will be Jon-Erik Kellso on trumpet, Harvey Tibbs on trombone, Mark Shane on piano, Rob Adkins on bass, and Paul Wells on drums. And as customary, the concert will be preceded by a food truck picnic.

It's a marriage committed to musical excellence. Jazz trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos says of his wife Lorraine, 'She's a classically trained guitarist, and her practice can be intimidating at times.' That helps motivate him to practice more, usually four or five hours a day. But she has said, his practicing inspires her to practice more because she feels guilty if she doesn't. Fortunately for the couple, and perhaps the neighbors, they both have successful careers that prevent them from escalating into a friendly, but potentially fatal, competition.

The Bickford Theatre at the Morris Museum presents The Antoinette Montague Experience in concert on Thursday, July 26, as part of the popular Summer JazzFest, which combines food trucks and music for a fun summer evening. Antoinette Montague is an award-winning jazz and blues singer who performs all over the world, but has never forgotten her New Jersey roots. Joining Ms. Montague will be Ken Peplowski on sax and clarinet, “King” Solomon Hicks on guitar, Brandon McCune on piano, Melissa Slocum on bass, Bobby Sanabria on drums, and tap dancer AC Lincoln. The food truck picnic begins at 5:30 p.m. and the concert at 7:30 p.m.
