The summer concludes with South Pacific, an ever-topical story of love in the time of war, and one of the most heralded musicals of all time. Since its premiere in 1949, it has won countless awards, including the 1950 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Awards both for its original run and its 2008 revival. Featuring some of the greatest songs in musical theater history, including 'Some Enchanted Evening,' 'I'm in Love with a Wonderful Guy,' and 'A Cockeyed Optimist,' this remarkable production will stay with you for years to come. Known for staging “the ultimate in intimate productions” (The New York Times), On Site Opera begins their sixth annual season on September 29-30 with an evening of powerful monodramas including Dominick Argento's Miss Havisham's Wedding Night and Hector Berlioz's La Mort de Cléopâtre (The Death of Cleopatra) in the exquisite grand ballroom at The Harmonie Club. The evening stars soprano Leah Partridge as Miss Havisham and mezzo-soprano Blythe Gaissert as Cleopatra and features the string quintet SYBARITE5 at the center of a chamber orchestra. Conducted by OSO's Music Director, Geoffrey McDonald, and directed by the company's General & Artistic Director, Eric Einhorn, the site-specific production features lighting design by Shawn Kaufman and costume design by Fay Leshner. OSO invites audiences to join as Miss Havisham's wedding guests for the evening – there's champagne and cake for all! (more...)

Seventeen young professionals from around the US were chosen from almost 700 applicants to participate in Opera North's Resident Artist program.  OPERA America, the national service organization for opera and the nation's leading champion for American opera, is pleased to announce that Timothy O'Leary, general director of Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, has been elected the new chairman of OPERA America's board of directors. He has been involved with OPERA America since 2006, when he participated in Leadership Advance, one of the organization's professional development programs. He joined OPERA America's board in 2011. O'Leary was elected chairman at OPERA America's recent annual business meeting — held during Opera Conference 2016 in Montreal — where eight new members were also elected to the board and three current members were re-elected to three-year terms.  (more...)

From Thursday, June 9 to Saturday, June 11, Washington DC Metro Area audiences will get to experience the magic of Ragtime - The Musical at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Virginia. Making this production even more special to the DC Metro Area, one of the cast members, Daniel Gorham, is a native to Baltimore, Maryland. A graduate of the University of Maryland, Gorham comes from a background in opera and vocal performance and has been making the transition to musical theater. Ragtime - The Musical is Gorham's first national tour, and he is part of the show's ensemble and has also covered the role of Coalhouse Walker Jr. I recently spoke with Daniel about his shift to musical theater, the Ragtime experience, and his future career plans.
