This musical is everything a piece of musical theater ought to be. There is a little prologue with the character of Jean Shepherd. We know immediately who is whom and the exact nature of the piece's dramatic crux. Devotees of the movie will find much that is familiar, though there has been some rearrangement, extension, enhancement and addition. Dialogue flows as stage dialogue should: with snappy delivery, different voices and more wit than is common in Real Life. Musical numbers are lively and either reveal character or move the plot. Scene changes are rapid and full of children's holiday pagent-styled elements. Ralphie's home is an adorable cutaway dollhouse. The cast is energetic and charming. This production should satisfy fans of musical theater, fans of the movie, fans of holiday shows, fans of family-friendly entertainment and really anyone who isn't a Grinch or a Scrooge. (more...)

Todd Freeman. Previews began on December 1, 2016 (press performances are Saturday, December 10 at 3pm and Tuesday, December 13 at 7:30pm; opening night is Sunday, December 11) and the production runs through January 29, 2017 in the Downstairs Theatre, 1650 N. Steppenwolf continues its 41st season with the Chicago premiere of Lucas Hnath's The Christians directed by ensemble member K. Todd Freeman. The cast features ensemble member Tom Irwin as Pastor Paul and ensemble member Robert Breuler as Elder Jay with Shannon Cochran as the Pastor's wife, Elizabeth, Glenn Davis as Joshua and Jacqueline Williams as Congregant. Set designer Walt Spangler transforms The Downstairs Theatre into a church where a live choir performs onstage. Under the musical direction of Jaret Landon, the choir features Faith Howard, Yando Lopez, Jazelle Morriss, Mary-Margaret Roberts, Charlie Strater and Michael Weatherspoon. (more...)

As it embarks on its 10th Anniversary Season, Sideshow Theatre Company is pleased to announce the playwrights for "The Freshness Initiative," the company's commissioning and new play development program, now in its third year. The 2016/17 season will feature public readings of brand new plays by J. Nicole Brooks, Selina Fillinger and Isaac Gomez. The readings will take place at Victory Gardens Theater during May, June and July of 2017. Two of the world premiere productions featured in Sideshow's 2016/17 Season were developed through "The Freshness Initiative," Philip Dawkins' The Happiest Place on Earth and Calamity West's Give It All Back.
