The York Theatre Company, dedicated to the development of new musicals and the preservation of musical gems from the past, presents the first of three shows in the Winter 2017 Musicals in Mufti Series: the 1961 musical Milk and Honey, with book by Don Appell, and music and lyrics by Jerry Herman. A friendly reminder that performances begin Saturday afternoon, January 28, 2017 for 11-performances only through February 5, 2017 at the York Theatre Company at Saint Peter's (entrance on East 54th Street, just east of Lexington Avenue). I was fortunate enough to see Tyne Daly in Terrence McNally's "Mothers and Sons" when it was on Broadway. So when I heard that ArtsWest was putting up a production of the show from one of my favorite playwrights, starring Suzy Hunt and Evan Whitfield, already some of my favorite actors in town, and Jason Sanford, who's quickly becoming another one of my favorites, and directed by Makaela Pollock, who's quickly becoming one of my favorite directors in town, I was hopeful to say the least. But even with all that promise in one show it can all still go horribly wrong especially after you've seen it done by an icon. Well, fortunately for me, and for you Dear Readers who need to get out to see this one, every single ounce of hopeful promise and potential I had in my heart before seeing this production was lived up to and then some in a show that succeeds on so many levels brilliantly. Manhattan Concert Productions has just announced lead casting for their 25th anniversary concert version of Gershwin's musical comedy Crazy for You. Tony award nominees Tony Yazbeck and Laura Osnes, will co-star as Bobby Child and Polly Baker for this one night only event at David Geffen Hall, Lincoln Center on February 19, 2017 at 8:00 p.m. Five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman will direct the Tony Award-winning Crazy for You 25 years to the day from its opening night on Broadway. The performance features Stroman's choreography from the original production, a chorus of 240 singers from across the United States, a professional cast and creative team, and the enlarged forces of the New York City Chamber Orchestra. Following the success of The Secret Garden earlier this year, Crazy for You marks the fifth installment of Manhattan Concert Productions' critically acclaimed Broadway Series that has also included Parade, Titanic, and Ragtime.
