BWW Album Review: HAIRSPRAY LIVE!BWW Album Review: HAIRSPRAY LIVE!
by Remy Holzer - Jan 5, 2017

Skeptics of musical theater like to ask, 'But how do they know the song?' when characters join in during a musical number. One of the virtues of HAIRSPRAY is that the audience itself actually does this: the songs are so catchy that we start singing along. This is appropriate, given the show's message of inclusivity and empowerment of the ordinary. Marc Shaiman (music and lyrics) and Scott Wittman (lyrics) are responsible for the irresistible score of this show, set in Baltimore in the 1960s, that follows plucky, overweight teenager Tracy Turnblad's quest to integrate the 'Corny Collins Show,' an AMERICAN BANDSTAND-style teen dance party that she adores. Along the way, she falls in love with one of its stars, locks horns with another, makes new friends who are black and have a different perspective and a different way of dancing, and finds a place for herself on the show and in life. And her mother Edna and best friend Penny also benefit from Tracy's widening world. (more...)

BWW Review: ELF - THE MUSICAL Jingles into OC's Segerstrom CenterBWW Review: ELF - THE MUSICAL Jingles into OC's Segerstrom Center
by Michael L. Quintos - Dec 26, 2016

Upon learning that part of Segerstrom Center for the Arts' holiday programming this season was to finally bring a national tour production of ELF - THE MUSICAL---the 2010 Broadway stage musical adaptation of the popular Will Ferrell holiday movie---to its stage, I was pretty ecstatic. For the most part, ELF---which performs at SCFTA through January 1, 2017---delivers enjoyable laughs sprinkled here and there throughout its two acts, and even offers up a non-equity cast equipped with lovely singing voices. But while ELF - THE MUSICAL is certainly festive and has lots of smile-inducing moments, overall, I felt the presented production felt surprisingly subdued. While, sure, it had plenty of genuinely funny and heart-warming moments, many aspects of the NETworks Presentations production needed to be much more over-the-top, manic, and downright silly. BWW Review: Endearing ANNIE Graces the Memphis OrpheumBWW Review: Endearing ANNIE Graces the Memphis Orpheum
by Caroline Sposto - Dec 15, 2016

It's the time of year to reflect on the past and enjoy familiar stories that warm our hearts. In otherwords, 'tis the season for ANNIE. That spunky waif has been part of our American culture for more than 130 years. She was first penned into existence by poet James Whitcomb Riley in 1885. His poem, 'Little Orphant Annie',was inspired by Mary Alice 'Allie' Smith, an orphaned child who came to live in the Riley home. (more...)

BWW Review: HAIRSPRAY LIVE! Serves as a Joyful, Optimistic Reminder of a Powerful MessageBWW Review: HAIRSPRAY LIVE! Serves as a Joyful, Optimistic Reminder of a Powerful Message
by Matt Tamanini - Dec 8, 2016

There is one undeniable quality that HAIRSPRAY has retained as it has journeyed from the big screen to the stage, back to the big screen, and now to the small. The infectious excitement and optimism that Tracy Turnblad sings with in the opening number, 'Good Morning Baltimore,' is one of the most magical and important gifts that the musical theatre has given in recent decades. From the moment that the original musical burst onto Broadway in 2002, it has been a literal and figurative rainbow of joy and happiness, and fortunately for the show's legions of fans, directed by Tony-winner Kenny Leon, NBC's live adaptation has maintained every delightful ounce of the musical's giddy goodness.
