The fourth annual Blumenthal Performing Arts High School Musical Theater Awards culminated Sunday, May 17, at a gala award celebration where winners in 12 categories were announced and nominees for Best Actor, Best Actress and Wells Fargo Best Musical performed live on stage at the Belk Theater. Two River Theater, under the leadership of Artistic Director John Dias and Managing Director Michael Hurst, announces the lineup of productions for its 2015/16 Season. The season will launch in September with August Wilson's Seven Guitars, directed by Brandon J. Dirden and will include the musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, directed by Jessica Stone; a new music-theater production of Shakespeare's Pericles created by Rinde Eckert and David Schweizer; and the Transport Group's critically acclaimed production of I Remember Mama, directed by Jack Cummings III. Playwrights Horizons is now accepting entries for its popular LIVEforFIVE online lottery for up to two $5 tickets each to the New York premiere of THE QUALMS, a new play by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Bruce Norris (Clybourne Park and The Pain and the Itch at PH, Domesticated).  Directed by Tony and Obie Award winner Pam MacKinnon (Clybourne Park and Completeness at PH; Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?; this season's A Delicate Balance and The Heidi Chronicles), the play is the final production of the theater company's 2014/2015 Season.    (more...)

Arizona Musicfest has selected  Ryanne McLaren, a senior from Campo Verde High School in Gilbert as the 2015 Arizona Musicfest Scholarship Winner.  The $2500 award will support the young pianist's studies at Biola University Conservatory of Music in La Mirada California where she has been accepted to pursue Bachelor's Degree in Performance in Piano and Organ.  She will begin her studies at Biola in the fall of 2015.   As a scholarship recipient she is elibible to receive annual renewals for the Arizona Musicfest Scholarship with the potential to receive $10,000 during her college career. Beck Center Youth Theater closes its 66th season with Oliver! May 15 - 24, 2015 on the Mackey Main Stage. Featuring 56 Beck Center students, audiences will follow the adventures of the young orphan, Oliver Twist, as he explores the streets of London. Show times are 7:30 p.m. Fridays and 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. A special student matinee performance will take place at 10 a.m. on Thursday, May 21. Tickets are on sale now. (more...)

In Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, which will mark the Wilma's 11th production of a work by Tom Stoppard, minor characters take center stage as they journey on a boat taking Prince Hamlet to England with players from the royal court. As these characters unknowingly sail to a fate Shakespeare has already scripted for them, arguments of free will and determinism abound, all set to the constant travel game of flipping coins. In this battle of wits, Stoppard's characteristic wordplay and case of mistaken identities create a spectacle that's philosophical, clownish, and complete with a pirate-ambush. (more...)

In this taut 2013 theatrical adaptation of Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela's award winning-book, the apartheid regime's most notorious assassin and head of its death squad, Eugene de Kock (played by Matthew Marsh), sits opposite psychologist Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela (played Noma Dumezweni) in Pretoria Central Prison in 1997. Gobodo-Madikizela is a member of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission determined to understand his actions. She questions de Kock, who is sentenced to two life terms plus 212 years for crimes against humanity, murder, conspiracy to murder, attempted murder, assault, kidnapping, illegal possession of firearms, and fraud. Broadway composer Charles Strouse, who has written scores for over 30 stage musicals, including 14 for Broadway, and is a three-time Tony Award winner, a two-time Emmy Award winner, and whose cast albums have earned him two Grammy Awards will visit the school and lead a 'Talk-Back' with students. The Teaneck Community Charter school will present a production of the recently created 'Bye Bye Birdie Young Performers Edition.'
