Ruslan Biryukov, renowned cellist, mentor and pedagogue will appear as the Cello Soloist in the World Premiere Performance of composer Masatoshi Mitsumoto's 2nd Cello Concerto, Jan. 11, which will be the centerpiece of a program presented by the Cal State LA Department of Music, Theatre and Dance and the Olympia Philharmonic Society in a concert entitled, "FROM BEETHOVEN TO MITSUMOTO," featuring the CalStateLA Symphony Orchestra and Olympia Youth Orchestra performing together in concert under the baton of Fung Ho, Music Director and Conductor. Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park Artistic Director Blake Robison announced today that Obie Award-winning director Eric Ting will be added next season to the theatre's Associate Artists program, which was launched by Robison in 2013 for his second season at the Playhouse. Ting will join current associate artists Timothy Douglas, Michael Evan Haney and KJ Sanchez, who have served the Playhouse in that capacity for the past two years. (more...)

Andrew Llloyd Webber, Stephen Swartz, and everyone at Disney Theatrical, I hope you're taking notes. A musical doesn't need falling chandeliers, flying green girls, a budget larger than the GDP of most nations, or even show-stopping numbers to be successful. All a show really needs to resonate with an audience is a strong story and interesting characters. Those two elements are precisely why Fiddler on the Roof has enchanted audiences for 50 years and counting, and The Playhouse's current production of it is a wonderful example of how moving this simple musical can be.
